Winchester 760 powder opinions

I am trying to figure out loads for my new .340 Weatherby. I found a box of the 185gr TSX bullets I was going to try first. It looks like from most manuals info I can find (which is very little for the .340) that for this weight I need a faster powder than Reloader 19 to achieve max velocities. I have been looking for burn rate charts that show Reloader 17 but havent found one. They all show RL15 and RL22. Anyways in the middle is where I need to be. This points me toward H414 and Win760. I have a good friend that swears up and down about the Win ball powders and back in the day my Dad loved to shoot the discontinued Win 785 in his .257 Roy.

So whit is all of your opinions on this powder and what recommendations might you have otherwise? Thanks

Very good powder and it flows even better.
It is used in so many calibers that I always suggest people have it in their inventory.

Give it a go. What's the worst that can happen? A bad group? LOL

W760 is just a touch faster than RL19, so it might work just fine. I haven't used a ton of it, but I do like it.

My Barnes manual shows IMR 4350 as the most accurate powder tested for the 185 TSX. Powders listed for the 185 TSX are Win 760, Vit N550, IMR 4350, H4350, Hunter and RL19.

My recommendation would be to skip the 185 and shoot either a 225 or 250 grain bullet in the 340.

If you lean towards the lighter wt. .338 dia. bullets in your .340, try the Nosler 210 gr. PT.

My Wea'by rifle was sub-MOA with that bullet.

I already have the 185's. My thought is a lighter faster load to try first and then I will move to something bigger, say 225-250gr. I am a bit nervous to go from my lightning fast 7STW shooting 127gr bullets (3850 fps) to say the .340 with 250gr pills going much much slower. Mental thing, baby steps for me.

The further the distance the 340 will out perform your STW combination all day, any day.

Heavier bullets by default combat cross winds better than lighter bullets. Combine the extra bullet weight with some decent speed and you have a really nice set up.

Try the Win 760 or H414 (same exact stuff). I'm betting you won't be disappointed.

A 340 is all about 225 and better yet 250 grain bullets. IMO any thing less and you might as well have bought a high stepping 30 cal.

The 185's are better for the .338 Federal. You can get 3100 fps from the 210 Nosler Partition in the .340 and get more downrange energy and penetration. The .340 is a caliber for 210 to 250 grain bullets and massive downrange energy.

760 is basically H414.

Win 760 is 100 percent H414, as I stated above. It is the same identical powder with a different label.

Zero difference whatsoever. This is not assumptions, this is factual info.

Give IMR/Hodgdon a ring and they will tell you all about it. No difference other than if it makes someone feel warm and fuzzy to have a Winchester label or Hodgdon.
