I bought a Model 70 Carbine from a friend many years ago and couldn't find out much about it. It is a push feed style with a light 20" barrel in 30-06. It has carbine stamped on the barrel. I have looked on the web and haven't been able to find any information about it. I hope someone on here can shed a little light on it for me.

I've had a few of the push-feed 70s thru the years. They usually shoot ok, may have to float the barrel, though.

That looks to me like a "Lightweight" Model 70, push feed rifle with walnut stock and 20 inch barrel, that was made and sold in the later 1980's and early 1990's by USRAC (Winchester). I don't have exact dates of manufacture but remember seeing quite a few of them in stores. They were similar to the Sporter model except for a lighter weight stock and later on did not have CRF. They may have called them "Carbines" at one time but they evolved into the Lightweight Model 70 and always had 20 inch barrels, as far as I can remember.

No idea, but it does look like a nice rifle. Stock looks like it has some character in it.

Found this on another forum:

Other than Marlins, I also dabble in collecting post-'64 Model 70 Winchesters. My 1984 Winchester catalog list the "New for "84 Winchester Model 70 Lightweight Bolt Action Centerfire Carbines with Standard and Short Actions". They were available in 6 calibers, including your .30-06. The catalog states an American walnut stock with 16 lpi deep-cut checkering. I believe the barrels were marked 'Model 70 Carbine'.

I don't know exactly when Winchester stopped offering the Model 70 Carbine, as I have some gaps in my Winchester catalogs, but it is not listed in their 1990 catalog. So we can assume that the carbine was offered for 5 or 6 years starting in 1984.

The only other one I saw was on Gun Broker and it was a 270. I have had some work done to it. I have the trigger adjusted and the barrel is floated. It shoots pretty good, not great but acceptable. I could probably get it to shoot better with some careful reloading. I usually stick with minimum loads for I only hunt deer and I don't feel I need any more then them to kill one. It used to be my go to gun for mountain hunting till my son started to go with me. I picked up a used Model 70 Compact in 7mm-08. Much lighter recoil and less noise then the 30-06. Both guns are great for hunting in PA where shots are close and usually fast. They both point well with the short barrels. It seems like there are a lot of Model 70 people on here. I am a huge fan and have some neat guns. I will try and put some pictures on as time permits.

Actually, there are only two classes of people posting here: Model 70 owners and those who wish they had one. 8)

I fixed it for you also Mike. Even though I own a couple Model 70's you know the real rifles are 700's.

I had no idea I had misstated the matter so horribly, dub!

I can't believe how many misspellings there are in my posts today.

I'm laughing so hard I'm choking. I'm certainly glad there are no truly dedicated rifle cranks posting on here. Man, I'd hate to see what happened if people got serious about their rifles!

To paraphrase Shakespeare, "The gentleman doth protest too much, methinks." Whenever one encounters such vigorous protests, it bespeaks what lies hidden in the heart. Again paraphrasing (a notorious peanut farmer this time) such protests indicate one who is "lusting in his heart" for a Model 70.
