I am looking to buy The best medium range round for woodchucking. My wife is now interested in shooting some centerfire rounds. The gun needs to shoot flat and I really want a dead chuck with a round anywhere in the body. She is Danm strong but a mere 118 lbs and 5'4" so I got to watch the recoil. Of course I will buy reloading dies so she can work up a favorite round. I am Quickly becoming a Nosler fan and would like to keep using their bullets. Favorite load suggestions would be appreciated also.

I would consider two rounds: 223 Rem and 22/250. For the 223, 25.8grs Benchmark behind a 50gr Nosler BT. In my 22/250 I use 39.0grs H-414 and a 55gr Nosler BT.Rick.

I'd say go with the .204 Ruger. Deadly on varmints and very flat shooting. I'm sure Nosler will produce a bullet soon enough.

Any of the 22 centerfires would work well. If the possibility of deer hunting exist, you might also consider both the 243 Win and 257 Roberts. All are light recoiling rounds.
I shoot a M700 VLS in 22-250 with a 50 gr BT and 36.0 grs Varget. Very accurate load in my rifle.
I also have a M700 Classic in 257 Roberts. 100 gr BT and MAX load of IMR4350 shoots .5 MOA.

Hope this helps you out.

As a medium range round the .223 is difficult to beat. It has plenty of power for 'chucks out to 250-300 yards, recoil is not an issue in a varmint rifle, it is easy and cheap to load, and there are a lot of choices in rifles. I use a 40-grain BTip with 27.0 grains of Varget for shots to 200-250 yards.

I also shoot a .22-250 and love it, but it is louder and has more recoil in equal weight rifles. The .204 has appeal, but it is quite restricted in platforms and loading options....and factory ammo is not cheap. Ditto the .220 Swift, which is no better than the .22-250 for your use. IMO you'll both be happiest with the .223.

Lots of good ideas floating on this thread. I like the .233 Rem for a person starting out with centerfire. Heck I'm building a AR15 with a free float barrel for next years varmiting. Great posts guys, keep it up.
