A friend of mine was down at the Cabelas store in Lacey Wa. yesterday. He said they had a Remington Mondel 700 BDL in 8mm Rem Mag for $300 on the used gun rack. He said the gun was in great shape. They did not have any factory ammo on the shelves or he would have purchased the rifle. He does not reload and did not want the hassle of such a limited supply of ammo.

Great cartridge but does it ever kick and I am not recoil sensitive. I think it was an over looked cartridge. Deadly to say the least and the 7mmSTW is the same case necked down to .284. That is a real good buy for a hand loader who does not mind recoil.

It is quite a powerhouse for sure!! Over the years, because of other cartridges, the 8MM Rem. Mag. has gone by the wayside; just like the 6MM Remington! Too bad on both counts!.................However, if the brass is available, the 8mm Rem. would be an excellent round for any N/A game!

That sounds like a good deal. You could even put on a new barrel and change calibers. Its worth the price just for the action alone.

As for brass, a handloader could even use 375 H&H brass to fireform.

If your friend does not handload than it may not be the best choice for him. One of my bosses has one and he likes it but he has made the comment how hard ammunition is to find locally a few times. Remington does still catalog a single load and its not cheap, it is a 200 grain Swift A frame load. Seems like anyone who wants more than a 30 cal goes up to a much more common caliber such as a 338 cal.

The 8mm Remington mag was a commercial flop for Remington. I'm surprised they did not drop the ammunition like they did for the 5mm RF. I can remember looking at a nice 8 mm Remington 700 BDL in a gun shop in 1979. Almost bought it because the dealer was selling it for $220 trying to get rid of it. But he also did not have ammunition for it and was the only gun shop around for many miles. So I passed on it.

+ 1 what JD. said , i would pick it up just for the action.

To bad it's clear up in western washington I'd jump on that deal. I'v shot the big 8 I didn't think it was to bad about like a 300 Weatherby. Sounds like some will get a good deal.

+1 had 2 of them built! 220 grains at 3100 fps!

very good powerfull cartidge. Not very common, but if you load it wouldn't be too bad. The only downfall of the 8mm IMHO is the fact that there isn't a very good selection of bullets for it like the 338.

Actually, there's a pretty nice selection of bullets in 8mm (.323). Nosler makes 180 & 200gr, while Speer makes weights for this round's velocity from 150-200 (or maybe 220). Hornady makes similar varieties, and Remington makes the 185gr Cor-Lokt. Swift produces 200 & 220gr A-Frames, I believe. Overall, there are not as many options as for a .308cal or 7mm, but there are nearly as many as for the .338. If I had the cash and room for another big gun, I'd be interested in a deal like this.

That is true but with the 200 PT and AB what else does oe need?

I load 200 and 220gr A-frames for my Big 8.It makes an excellent moose/grizzly rifle for British Columbia hunting.Mine kicks a bit(it's bedded into a McMillan Mountain stock),but I wouldn't trade it for a .338.Monashee

Great cartridge, deadly, great ballistics and shoots far, glad it was not in a shop down here I would have bought it for sure.
