I was looking at the Wyoming leftover antelope tags list and there were plenty of tags left in the Northeast section of the state. It said access was a real issue there. I have never been antelope hunting so I would love to give it a try. Does anyone here know any landowners in that area? Any info would be helpful.

Thanks,

Wayne

Several outfitters have been operating in that area for years. They tie-up access to private land and get $$$$ for a 3 day antelope hunt. Many boast a 85-100% chance to shoot a 'lope.

Depends how bad ya want one.

Give it a couple of years and the number of tags will be up.
They've had a drought and a bad winter the last couple of years and that has really impacted the antelope numbers. Buy a bonus point this year is my advice. With three or four bonus points, I think they call them preference points in WY, you can be in a good unit with the chance to take a decent buck.
I hunted last year with no preference points and four doe tags.
This year I bought a preference point for antelope, deer, and elk.

If you call the Game & fish office in Cheyenne they will give you a contact number for the biologist in the zone (s) you are interested in. You can call them and they will send you a landowner list with names of ranchers who have had landowner tags turned in from that zone. You can then start calling landowners on the list. Be advised that the list is not up to date: one I called had been dead for 8 years according to his daughter and another told me they had been asking WG&F to take them off the list for several years. Some of the landowners will be tied up with outfitters, some will be full already, some have changed ownership, some no longer allow hunting, etc. It is however a way to start.

Yesterday, I purchased a buck tag and two doe tags in area 24 for my wife and myself. Unfortunately, there is very little access. We hunt on a chunk of private property at a reasonable rate. This year though, the land owner has cut access and is only letting us hunt because I have hunted with him for the last four years. There are a couple of public accessible pieces of property just south of Gillette. I don't know that I would make the trip to Gillette just to hunt the public access although the pieces don't look too bad.

It seemed that there was significant access just east of Cody in a wild horse area with left over tags (at least for does). I think that the land was BLM. We saw several antelope in the area but not as many as in the North east corner of Wy. In the future, I might hunt there if I have more time to spend in Wyoming.

Good luck

Normally,....but not this time. Maybe next year. That point system in Wyo. and the rest of the process has me bewildered. CL
