Yeah, But Will They Shoot?

I picked up a couple of new rifles. The first is the Model 7 CDL chambered in 260 Remington. I scoped it with a Leupold 2.5-8 X 36 VX-3 nestled in Talley rings. I picked this up for my grandchildren. Of course, grandpa will load for it and make certain that it is shooting good enough for them to use.

Then, my hunting partner talked me out of my BLR in 358, trading me for this Anniversary model of the 280 Remington. I'll be scoping it with a 4.5-14 X 40 VX-3 later this spring.

I can't believe that I divested myself of a Browning and picked up two Remingtons! I acquired these with genuine fear and trembling in light of Scotty's travails.

A couple of fine rifles (well, a rifle and a carbine) there in equally fine chamberings. I wouldn't be a bit concerned about the .280 given that they haven't made them (the LSS, outside of Mountain Rifles) for a number of years and Remington's problems seem more recent, and I think (hope in light of how many new Remingtons I've been buying?) that Scotty's problems were an anomaly.

You will love the 280! I pillar bedded mine last year, which also consists of bedding real good around the recoil lug and free floating the barrel. I topped it off with a redfield 3-9x50. Then I worked up my load to 47gr of H414 pushing a 150gr Nosler Ballistic Tip and a CCI LRP. This set up produces one hole groups at 100 yards.

ScreaminEagle,

I already have a 280 (my second) in a Model 70 Featherweight. It shoots 0.25 inch groups with 140 grain BSTs and PTs. I didn't really need another 280. I got it just because it was only produced one year. However, I'll work up some loads and see if I can't tag a bear next fall, or drop a few more deer, or possibly an elk or a moose. Looking at my safe, I'm going to have to begin acting like POP and sell a few rifles!

Moreover, I divested myself of a BLR in 358 that routinely shot 0.3 inch groups. Fortunately, I still have a Hawkeye in 358, and it shoots very well, indeed.

That is a fine pair of rifles for sure.
I am certain the older LSS 280 will be just fine once you get past that dreaded J lock.

The CDL 260 is set up perfect with the VX-3 2.5-8x36mm scope. Looking forward to your range reports.

The J lock will be replaced shortly, Jim. I will likely put in a stronger firing pin spring to make for faster lock-up. I passed on a couple of these when they were first released because I already had a 280. It is a handsome rifle, but I don't see myself getting rid of my Featherweight. It is the second 280 Featherweight I've owned, and each was a shooter. This one has been with me too long and taken far too many deer. However, I may focus on heavier bullets in this Remington. I am hopeful that the 260 is a shooter.

Those are two very fine looking rifles! I might have to get me a new winchester featherweight if you keep posting all these pics of them. If they shoot half as good as they look I would be a very happy camper!

I've been living with my wife for too long. When she buys a car, the make and reliability is immaterial; what matters is whether it is the right colour and looks nice. I'm kind of that way with a rifle. If it looks "purty," I can usually make it do.

Mike -
A couple of fine looking rifles AND Calibers you have there.
I have no doubt the .280 will be a shooter. The M7..... I'm sure
you will get-er dialed in as well. The 130AB out of that is a
get it done bullet.

Nice rifles! Im not a glowing supporter of "big green" either. But honestly, I have nothing to base it on excepy my uncles bias and preference for winchesters, rugers, and Mausers. You will be fine, that is some nice equipment! Oh and I like Savage of course. CL

Maybe you should make that 280 into an Ackley Improved version?

Nah, Corey. If I want a 280 Ackley, I'll buy an NCR. I hope to do break-in on the 260 tomorrow if the weather doesn't turn nasty. Today was a day to finish a couple of projects (243 and 300 RUM) and prepare for a couple of new projects.

I've got four of Big Green's efforts in my safe. In addition to these, I have a CDF SF in 257 Roberts and a 673 in 350 RM. I did get the 350 shooting quite well, but it took quite a bit of effort to make the rifle stable (pillar bedding, trigger, recoil pad, free float, firing pin and spring). Then, finding a load has not been easy. It simply will not shoot heavier bullets. I'm getting good velocity and accuracy out of 200 grain TSXs. The 257 Bob is a work in progress. It shoots acceptably, but it is not as accurate as I want. I'll get to these shortly and assess their capability and then work on load development.

I'm scoping the 280 with a Swarovski Z6 1.7-10 X 42 with Ballistic Turrets. I'll post a picture tomorrow after I mount it. I was going to put this scope on the 9.3 X 64 that is being built, but I'll likely put a Leupold 2-12 VX6 or a 4.5-14 X 40 VX3 with CDS on that one.
