Had a guy drive up from San Francisco for a cow hunt. He arrived yesterday afternoon with just enough time to confirm his zero as well as smacking steel at 300 and 500 yards.
He was well armed with a 338 wm; 220 grain Barnes TTSX; topped with a VX6 3x18.
After waiting for ODFW to open we were finally in position about 1100 hours. About seven minutes later we were watching a 350 class bull pushing some cows around about 600 yards across the canyon.
We were so preoccupied I forgot to watch the near slope.
Don't know how long she was there, we had been watching the bull for an hour, a good looking cow was quartering towards us at 225 yards.
Donn got on her and tapped the trigger. No reaction to the shot and she walked into some cover, never came out.
I left Donn, dropped down the hill and up to where I had last seen her. About the time I found the blood I heard Donn yelling. I took cover and told him to shoot. I waited a few minutes and then moved in. Donn's second shot broke her neck.
We learned the first shot had hit a little far back, through the gut and exited just in front of the hip. IMG_0653.JPGIMG_0655.JPG

Super hunt for the gentleman! Congratulations to him and to the guide.

Nice job Salmonchaser, by the way do they have trophy bull hunts on this ranch and how would I get the info?

Congrats to both of you! And I'm reminded of how game seems to sometimes simply "materialize" on a slope!

The ranch is in the WallaWalla GMU. I think it takes about 14 years to draw a branch antler tag.Landowners also must draw but they will get a tag every 3 or 4 years.
The boss to date has not had anyone approach him with an any bull tag.
The bull we were watching was a no question about it bull, looked like a big caribou.

Thanks, I think I have only 11 points, was just looking to do an Oregon hunt before I get too old. I have 5 bulls between 300 and 340 so am looking for something in the 350 plus class.

Five good Bulls like that is a tremendous accomplishment in particular if they came off public land.

Only 3 came off public land, the 340 was AZ muzzle loader and the wife killed her first elk ever a 320 bull in AZ also.

Congrats to both hunter and guide, great looking table fare that will eat very well.

We aged her as a three year old, cut and wrapped into three ice chests for the trip home: 150-170 pounds of meat.
When it was all done the coyote bucket only held about 8 pounds of scrap. One of the other guides and I were really surprised at how well she cut up.
I'm sure she'll eat well.
