Well, I was finally able to get out and zero the 45-70 with the new 1.25x4 VXR on it. I gotta admit. Very nice optics. I was shooting it side by side with the Swaro and Minox 2-10. Very impressed with the red dot, and the #4 reticle. Very nice. Not made for shooting bug holes, but it should be excellent for the hunting I do with the 45-70. It tracks perfectly as well.

Those were all shot at 137 yards. Yeah, I know, weird range, but the way the target is set up on the hunt club area ended up that way, so I ran with it for today.

I didn't include my last target, but it is just 3 .458 holes in the orange dot on top. I was shooting at the top dot the entire time, but just kept dialing up to get it zeroed.

Again, those looking for a nice, low powered variable, I am not sure you could go wrong for the price. Seems to be made well, the adjustment is pretty nice as well. Looks clear and again, I love the reticle. Should be excellent for hunting in the timber and thick areas.

Oh, the load is 40 grains of RL7, Starline cases, CCIBR2's and Dave's 405 grain bullet. I tell you, it is the BEST cast bullet I have shot and it is much more accurate than I can shoot, and very consistent. Wished I had a thousand or more of them..

Either way, I am thinking they will head to Idaho in a month for Spring Bear. Pretty sure they will work excellent. They run outta my rifle right at 1600FPS..

Excellent Scotty.

IF I pull a bear tag this fall, I will use my 45-70.

RL7 is a great powder for these big bores. My 444 shoots as well with RL7 or H335. H322 is another excellent .45-70 and .444 powder. I primarily shoot Beartooth 290 grain LFNGC with bang flop results.

Niceeeeeeeee !!!!!!!!! I think all of those groups would be considered a minute of "bear".

The VX-R is an impressive scope and your set up is a perfect match for what you would use the 45-70 for.
I am thinking hard on a VX-R scope myself.

Looks like the perfect setup for close range hunting Scott. I'm looking forward to getting some of those 405 grain bullets to try in mine.

Nice setup Scotty.
Really like the big loop lever also.
Those 405s at 1600 will be hammers.
Probably gave you a little push on your end also .
Wish you guys would quit posting these nice big levers. I keep playing with em at the store and sooner or later one will come home with me.

Your going to love them!

I shot a couple of Dave's 470's yesterday, the ones I had left over from the day you came and shot with us Joel. They print to the same POI as the 405's..

Dewey, the recoil with the 405's isn't that bad actually. Plus, I know those 405's aren't likely to stop in all but the largest of bears..

Need to contract Dave for some more of those 470's. Those suckers are FIERCE!

SJB,

Nice looking rifle and a bit different with the big loop and straight grip.

I have the Redfield Revolution 2-7x33 on mine and it has held zero over 3 years now of shooting pretty warm loads.

I shoot a variety of loads but for pigs prefer the Sierra 300g HP over AR2207 (4198) for around 2250fps. The below group was shot at 50m, off the tailgate of the ute...

I really am impressed with the little Redfield.

Great combo SJB and good luck with the bears!

Bob,

Is it true that a recent survey said that when shot with 300 grain Sierra HPs, 9 out of 10 pigs said, "Ouch?" Good looking pig slammer.

SWEET Rifle! That rifle was meant to swat pigs! Very cool picture. That Redfield looks great too.
