Well, I had some work to do with the 338 Win Mag yesterday and wanted to get the Newton on paper again, plus get some solid chrono data to use should I get the chance to shoot it long. The VX6 is a very nice scope. Only real complaint (s) at this point is the turrets don't seem very positive and I cannot for the life of me get the rear Alumina Cap tight enough for my taste. Small things really, but the optics seem really good and I am enjoying the eye relief.

I am using 76.5 grains of RL17, reformed 375 Ruger brass, 225 AB's and CCI250's.

2938, 2954, 2928, 2966, 2941, 2953, 2975 FPS for an average of 2950 FPS.. Pretty happy with the speeds attained.

I got it on paper at 25 yards then took it to 200 yards. Pretty happy with the accuracy. The rifle is quite jumpy. I have to lay a hand over the barrel/forearm or the scope cause if I do not, the accuracy kinda goes in the tubes.

Overall, it's shooting pretty well. I am throwing one out here and there, but I don't have alot of bullet to seat deeper. Still not convinced the 1 out isn't my technique with the rifle.

Here is the rifle. Looks pretty sharp with the new scope.

I don't doubt that your Newton is jumpy, as you say. That is delivering a lot of energy to any game you should encounter; and the accuracy is assuredly accurate. The setup is certainly attractive. Man, I just have to think it will be a most effective rifle. It is just stunning to think of the power when that old cartridge is paired with new powders to deliver modern bullets. What a powerhouse!

I am pretty excited to use it Mike. Really is enjoyable to load and shoot. It has really done well with RL17 and 225 AB's. I have a SLEW of 250 PT's as well, but I think I will stick with the 225 AB's for right now. As long as I can keep it fed, it should do well.

Jake, it is the 2-12 with the #4 reticle in it.

I like the Newton's new look. Seems to be a very solid setup for chasing elk up and down those big hills.

Man that Leuy looks good on top of that Newton 8). As I have said many times before Leuy's have always been high in my books.
That Newton with a 225gr. AccuBond is going to lay the smack down on a Elk this coming fall!!! Sure looking forward to the story with photographs!!! :)

Blessings,
Dan

Thanks Fellas. I really dig the Newton. Awesome cartridge and it's very cool to be shooting a cartridge that has such awesome performance that was designed around the same time the 06 came out. The 06 has it by a couple of years but you get the picture.

The rifle is a truly awesome thumper. For a guy like me where 500 yards is a long shot on elk this rifle does everything I want really well. Accurate, puts out a 225 pretty quick and doesn't weigh 12lbs.

There is a lot to like about that gun and scope it can handle any hunting situation I can think of. The illuminated reticle is a really nice feature.

I didn't think I liked the #4 till I got to the range. Once I saw it on the paper I was much happier.

The illumination is nice but the reticle should be great for all but complete darkness.

I"m very happy to here the Newton doing so well for.
I'm glad to here you mention the 06 being older and still going strong while the Newton is still a wildcat.

Technically the Newton was a standard cartridge before the H&Hs but they got kibashed due to the timing of the Great Depression. Remember, the same guy that created the 250 Savage, 22 Highpower, 300 Savage and a few others was Mr. Newton. Way too far ahead of his time. Were the Newton released in 2001 thy would have been called differently I bet.

Since you like to bash the 30-06 I thought I would pull your string a little.
If Newton had been able to introduce his cartridges around the same time as Weatherby we would probably see a lot more Newtons than we do.
If I wanted a high performance medium bore the Newton would be high on my want list.
Right now I'm very happy with my 35 Whelen, the Newtons little brother and the 06's big brother.

Maybe Nosler will add the Newton to it's rifle line up and also offer a sleek 250 gr AccuBond as well ;) would be really nice........

That sure is a great looking rifle Scotty. I really like the stainless with the stock and the scope. It looks like it just fits well together. Glad you are liking that Leupold so far. I still think they build a fine scope and I sure wouldn't want to be an elk with you pointing that thing at me!!

Looks good, Scotty!

With all the false starts and up's/down's Leupold has had with the VX6, it's good to hear good reports on it from the field. I have other scopes that are a bit higher on my "want" list, but the VX6 gets one most of what those would do, and does it for a good chunk of change less, which leaves coins in your pocket for elk hunts, bullets, and so forth. :)

Well, I finalized the zero from the bench this morning at 250. Going to sling it next time and get a proper zero from the ground. The Newton is ready to rock. Very happy with the rifle/scope combo. Wished I was headed for moose or grizzly but it'll happen in due time.
