Man, that is impressive stuff. That old 8x57 looks pretty good even when ran up to 55K PSI.. I'd imagine the 26" tube helps it out some, but still, even in a 24" barrel it would look danged good too.

I have shot a reloaded a lot for the 8x57. A 23" barrel would do just fine for a 200grain bullet to reach 2650 ft/sec. One might benefit with a longer barrel but it won´t be much since the 8x57 uses medium fast/slow burning powders.
I see the QL suggest a 58 grain Norma MRP powder. I don´t see how that would ever get stuffed into the case?. That powder is no good for that caliber. It won´t work well enough to ever be considered. I can barely get 53grain N150 without compress very hard using Norma or RWS cases. I once tried 56grain N160 and a bullet seated way out to barely be in the brass, and already velocity dropped so much(2394 ft/sec) that I couldn´t see if I had a hotloaded .30-30 or a whimpy .308whimpy.
If one wants to get the best out of a 8x57 Vithavouri N150, 550 or Norma URP(or similar American powder) is the only way to go.

Looks to be an excellent cartridge, a lot of power without burning a lot of powder. One day..........

Yeah, for sure Gerry.. Pretty efficient on the powder usage in regards to the speeds it'll produce..

Need some info on this 180 and 200 running in a modern action. Thanks.
I have an 8x57 Mauser 98 my grandfather brought home from Germany in WWII! My dad killed his first deer with that rifle. It's still original military. It would be a great action to do a build on but I hate to take it from original. It has the bayonet and everything. I should post up a picture.

That would be a cool rifle for sure David. Those old Mauser's are pretty cool battle rifles. I'd probably cringe at cutting one up too..

I thought this was pretty interesting. If you were to use a little more modern 60/62K numbers in a modern rifle, it is really putting the heavier bullets out quite quick..

The 8X57 is a fine cartridge that will do about anything the 30-06 will do. It is underrated in great measure by the decision to load the cartridge light in deference to older rifles with a .318 bore that might be in the hands of the unwary.

Well guys I'm working on a rebore got a donor for cheap M70 Classic sporter in 30-06 probably end up with a 22" barrel. I've already got brass need bullets and dies.

In a modern rifle it's only 100fps behind a 325WSM. I sure do like seeing older cartridges brought back to life using modern bullets and powders. Jake, I was surprised you didn't do a 338-06 then I remembered you already have one.
Scott.

This is a great project. Good for bringing a neglected cartridge back to prominence, if only for yourself. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up an 8X57 should one appear.

Without a doubt. Great stuff, I like seeing these older cartridges come back a little more. It is really nice to see companies like Norma and Nosler making brass for them..

Well unfortunately this one will have to wait a while longer it's gotta have a new tube can't rebore to get it done so might be a while.

I have a Remington 700 Classic in 8mm, one of the last in the series. I got it a year or so after they were marketed when a distributor for one of my LGS's had them on clearance. If I recall correctly, I think they were $325 for brand new rifles and my dealer did me a favor and sold it to me at cost plus tax. I couldn't very easily say no to that.

I haven't shot it for a long time but as I recall, it shot very nicely and I loaded up some 180 BT's for it but never hunted it.

Ron

I shot one of the Remington Classics for a customer. I was very favourably impressed with the rifle. I'd say you got a smoking deal, Ron.

I helped Jake out with some more 8x57 brass also also as they have some at Shooter's Pro Shop right now! It's so nice that we all come together for the betterment of each other!
