Loads for upcoming deer season.

What are you guys gonna be running this year? I have two loads for my 6.5 CM ready to go after playing and adjusting them all summer.
1) 120 grain Barnes TTSX with RL16 @ 2920 fps.
2) 140 grain Sierra gameking with RL16 @2840 fps.
Also my 9.3x62 mauser.
1) 286 grain hornady sp-rp with varget @ 2410 fps.
Also should be receiving my Timney trigger for the old Mauser. Hoping it a pretty simple install. I’m prepared for some minor fitting, but if it’s too much I’ll have to send it to a gunsmith.

Same old reliable. Away from my books so I don't have charge weights. .280 Rem with 145 Speer GS. Don't remember the charge exactly, couple of grains of IMR 4350 below max. Tight cover load, approximates 7-08 speed. Also have my power line load, max charge under 145 Speer BTSP. Zeroes to 250 with same sight setting as GS load.

Backup/bad weather rifle... 30-06 with 180 gr. Norma Alaska RN stepping right along over a max load of IMR 4064. Also a tight cover/bad angle load.

Feeling a touch of nostalgia. Might take the M99 .300 afield this year in the right conditions. 41 gr IMR 4064 pushing a Sierra 150 pro-hunter under iron sights. Same bullet style I've used in .308 or .300 Sav. since I started hunting deer, but using up some Sierras I bought during the last component shortage.
 
I think I will be taking these with me on my 3 1/2 week deer hunting trip to east NC this year.
25-06 shooting 117 Sierra Pro Hunter pushed by IMR 4350 to 3000 fps.
264 Win mag shooting 130 AccuBond pushed by Retumbo to 3350 fps.
308 Win shooting 125 Ballistic tip pushed by IMR4895 to 3000 fps.
T/C Contender pistol 14" barrel 30-30AI shooting 125 Ballistic Tip pushed to 2670 fps by IMR 4198.
These are all tried and true deer thumpers.
 
260 Rem - 130 gr AccuBond although I might use my other favourite 6.5mm deer bullet which is the 140 gr Ballistic Tip.

270 Win - sighted in with the 150 gr Ballistic Tip but might use the 150 gr Speer Hot Cor.

35 Whelen - 200 gr AccuBond, might be hunting moose where there is a good chance at a mule deer so this bullet will take both.

6.5x55 - 120 gr Ballistic Tip, my wife's gun but again we may try the 140 gr Partition just because.
 
2nd season Colorado Mule deer hunt Unit 80..
7.65 Mauser, 180gr Sierra Pro Hunter stacked over 53gr RE16, 2700 fps. this will be my primary hunting rifle for this hunt.
270 Win, 145gr Hornady ELDX, 58 gr Norma MRP, 3060 fps. Backup rig.
444 Marlin, 280gr Swift A Frame, 43gr H4198, 2080 fps, in case the wooly mammoths show up :lol: .

My wife Kelli will be using a 257 Rob, 115 Nosler BT's.
If we fill our tags early enough we will head up to Unit 551 and try and find an elk.

Gerry I killed a lot of whitetails with those 130 accubonds out of a 260 I used to own. I honestly have no excuse why I have not loaded any in my Creedmoor, guess I’m gonna have to fix that soon. I’ll also be carrying my early 1950’s Winchester 94 in 30-30. Will be using the factory 150 grain core lokts in it. Also good luck to everyone, and be safe! Can’t wait for the pics to start showing up!

This past crop damage deer season I used my 338 RUM with the 250 gr AB to take 6 deer. If I get some 265 gr ABLR's, I'll give them a go in November. Otherwise, I'll use my 280AI with the 150 gr ABLR, M1895 45-70 with 300 gr BST and M1894 44 Rem Mag with Nosler 240 grcJHP. Sue will use her M48 280AI140 gr AB and Ruger M77 44 Rem Mag with Nosler 240 gr JHP.
My daughter Danielle will use her 700 Classic 257 Roberts with a 115 gr BT or my 1894 44 Mag. If she uses my Marlin, guess I'll use my TC Contender 375 Win 200 gr Sierra Game King. :)

25-06 with 115 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, loaded to 3120 fps via Retumbo

And if I "need" something else these are on standby:

30-06 with 200 gr Nosler Partitions, loaded to 2600 fps (I have a bunch of 165 B Tips loaded, but haven't re-zeroed the rifle for them, it's still sighted-in with the 200 gr ammo I took to Alaska)

30-30 with 170 gr factory soft points from both Federal & Remington

My son will choose from either of his rifles:

6mm Rem with 95 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips at 3,000 fps (RL-22)

30-06 with 165 gr Nosler Partitions at 2750 fps (H4350)

Both are proven performers!

Our rifle season starts this coming weekend...

I've spent all summer and most of this fall so far messing around with a bunch of different bullets and a few have risen to the top in the 280..154 gr Hndy Interbond, 150 gr Scirocco 2, and 120 TTSX..But more than likely I'll go back to what I now, and head out after deer with 140 gr accubonds...But I do want to see for MYSELF how the 120 gr TTSX will perform on deer zipping along at 3230 fps and "gnats eye accurate" (I finally found a use for the pound of Superformance powder I'v had lying around) I also want to use the "new to me" 6.5-06 and 120 gr NBT's.

My daughter will be using her 7-08 and of course 140 gr AB's. I suggested we try other bullets "just to see" and she shut the idea down pretty fast..LOL "If it aint broke, don't fix it"

I've taken an apprentice under my wing this year, a young fella who washes the trucks at the shop has a keen interest in deer hunting..In his 17 years on earth, he's only ever hunted small game with his grandpa, who isn't physically able to get out anymore..So, I'm going to take him to deer camp this year and let him use my 7x57 loaded up with either 120 TTSX's, or NBT's. Still haven't decided. Never setting foot in a deer camp before, it should be quite the experience for him.. :lol:

I’m also determined to see how the TTSX performs myself. I’ve loaded and shot 150 of them throughout the summer, they are unbelievable accurate out of my rifle even surpassing match loads. If I’m not happy with their performance I have 140 Gamekings ready to go, they have been a proven performer for me in various 6.5’s over the years. In your case I doubt exspansion will be an issue with speeds you’ll be cranking out of that 280! Good luck and I hope you get that young man a deer this year.

Working with my daughter to make up some new loads for her 7mm-08. 140gn Berger Hunting VLD over H4895. These bullets are more sensitive to seating depth than powder charge. It has been fascinating. Best group so far is .423”, and we still haven’t exhausted all the possibilities.


I’ll shoot my old 35Remington with LeverEvolution ammo (Hornady is kind enough to publish this data). It’ll shoot MOA all day long, so nothing to change there.

Also working on some new loads for my Dad for his 308. 165 gn Game King over Varget.

Welcome to the forum, Gummi_Bear. A friend used his 7mm-08 loaded with 140 gn Berger VLDs to take a nice grizzly a couple of years back. They will work.
 
The Timney triggers for Mausers are a great addition and fairly straight forward to install. I did mine without issue, so if I can do it... I did have one minor issue that I had to resolve. I had to use my dremel tool and remove additional wood from the stock, and also remove some metal from the military trigger guard. But it works great now.

I'll be using that sporterized 30-06 Mauser with Williams peep sights this year with 165 gr. Sierra HPBT gamekings. Just had it out last Saturday and it shot really well at 50 yards. Will likely grab my Remington 783 308 with 125 gr Sierra PH's too. Bret
 
Elk.......................... 340 wby with 240 grain N.F. hand loads to 3027 fps.
mule deer..................300 wby with factory 180 grain SP's
whitetail.................... 7x57 with hand loaded 140 grain AB's

7mm Magnum out of a custom Sako M995, shooting 160 grain Accubonds with Retumbo at 3,140 fps.

300 Win Mag out of a custom Remington 700, shooting 180 Accubonds with RL-22 at 3,165 fps.

308 GA Precision Crusader, shooting 168 Ballistic Tips with Varget at 2770 fps.

Either the 3 will be fine for whitetails and hogs this season. Will be using the 300 Mag in January for a bull nilgai.

I am Nosler hooked.
 
Have three barrels that need their whitetail wings.
First will be the 7STW with a blazing hot moly coated 140 NAB.
Second will be with the 6x47Lapua and 100 NPTs
Third will be the 6x47Lapua with 105 Berger HVLDs
Fourth will be 6x47Lapua with 85gr Sierra GK HPBT
Finally, #5 will be 7mm-08 with 140 Sierra GK HPBT.
