Federal’s 7mm Backcountry

With all the available options nowadays, "wonder cartridge" may be a stretch. Looks like it won't gain much, if any, over the RUM. Curious what the length will be, I wonder if it'll be like the Sig Fury steel case by stuffing a lot of pressure in a short steel case.
 
The austere and practical side of me yawns. However the technology now widely in use was once quite experimental as well.

I don’t like the thought of having to rely solely upon hot loaded factory ammunition. Especially for minimal ballistic gain. I am not a fan of short barreled rifles in general.

But then again there are many things about certain guns and what hunting has become that I do not like.

I’m going to have to go with a NO on this one.
 
I'm a no as well. My 280AI pushes a 160 gr AB at 3000 fps, 150 gr ABLR at 3100 and the 140 gr AB at 3200. It more than enough for anything I hunt. And if I need more, I have plenty more I can reach for in the vault.

I'll have to see more info to make a decision...but my first instinct are similar to those voiced already...
We already have good 7mm cartridges which are providing great performance on most game which the 7mm is suited for.
If I am looking for more energy, I am not really looking for more velocity from the 7mm...I am looking for more mass to give that energy, and therefore a larger caliber that provides more frontal area to impart more shock on larger, tougher game (338, 358, 366 and 375 with 200-300 gr bullets) and yet maintains manageable recoil.

While it sounds crazy, I’d have to guess Federal has done some homework.

The idea of an 06 case making 28 Nosler speed in an 06 sized rifle sounds like something I’d love to have elk hunting. Time will tell. I heard the case is reload able so that’s a plus.

Heard there are 12-13 makers lined up to chamber them after it’s official.

Gotta admit, a 170 grain Terminal Ascent at 3150 from a 7 1/2 pound all up rifle sounds like a complete hammer, but a feather to carry. Mainly those are the ballistics that led me to the Mashburn Super, but I’m a pound heavier and a round less in the mag of said cartridge.
 
Wasn’t Federal recently sold? Maybe they are trying to be relevant in the midst of opinions on the sale and scorn of the parent company.

That said, I have two 7mm Remington Magnums that with the newer powders available, I can push most bullets past the point of failure (maybe excluding mono’s or A Square). I don’t see anything I would gain, need or jwant. When I see steel cased ammunition I think chamber wear and inaccurate AK’s and Negants. The greatest probability for this new round if it is in fact introduced is a complete flop. This is all just my opinion and may not be popular. Don’t beat me up too bad gentlemen.

Edit: We’ll be using bottle jacks to resize mild steel cases. lol 🤣

Being their under Czech group , they’re probably Berdan primed steel cases.

I didn’t think about it but I suppose it’s possible. I don’t know it may take off like wildfire but I can’t imagine steel cases would be easier to load than brass. I understand the standard length, the commonality, and convenience of a .473 case head, if that’s in fact the head dimension. Seams like a huge expense for tooling and assembly line refits to gain 100-150 fps in performance, and that’s only with factory ammo. Many big 7’s match the factory specs with quality hand loads.
 
my 7saum is gtg! the steel case should be an easy button as it might not stretch as much or not at all and if that's the case it wouldn't seal like brass does or made for? i use semi-autos mainly and wouldn't want ant full steel cased ammo in any of my firearms. ba's would be fine
 
High pressure equals more throat erosion as well. It might use less powder but the higher pressures will eat barrels as fast as the 28 Nosler, which is pretty fast. Steel cases in a steel barrel is a recipe for chamber damage if the cases aren't perfectly clean. There is no give like brass affords.
