Saturday after Thanksgiving in PA and our ranch in TX it opens second Saturday in October. She probably won’t hunt there this year because our youngest gets is still too young to leave with her Mom or bring with us.Deer season isn't far off.
Good reason for her to get a new rifleHaha, I have many. This is my wife’s rifle and it’s her primary. She would hate to not have it.
Ralt,You don't have any back up rifles? This is a good excuse to get another rifle.
We are gifted group of ENABLERS for sure.Haha, I have many. This is my wife’s rifle and it’s her primary. She would hate to not have it.
I’ve been looking at a Model 307 in 7mm BackCountry. I could get it for “her”Good reason for her to get a new rifle![]()
280AI is very hard to beat and I no longer have one. I have a Remington 700 BDL in 7wsm.Ralt,
A 7 WSM or 280AI would make for a really nice back up rifle.

Dan,Oh, the 7mm WSM is one of my favorites. I have a left-handed Win. M70 that I really like. But, I don't know if I could pass on a left-handed 280AI if one popped up.
Fixed it for youJim, funny you should mention that. Did you know that my gunsmith has a beat up, left-handed, long action Rem. M700 on the shelf that would make a perfect donor rifle? We talked about building a 6.5-284 Norma with it. But, it could be made into a 280AI also. Hmmm....
Let's see:
I NEED it. Hmmm...
- Sako extractor
- Trued action
- Converted to 3-position safety (like my other rifles)
- Fast twist SS barrel
- Lightweight composite stock
- Trigger Tech trigger
- Choice of any long action, standard case head, cartridge
Jim, you certainly are a 280 Ackley enablerRalt,

As the old saying goes, "What does need have to do with it?" Not a bad justification.Jim, funny you should mention that. Did you know that my gunsmith has a beat up, left-handed, long action Rem. So many options Dan...But if you are thinking about going with a rebated rim in a 6.5 why not stretch it out a little more to the Weatherby 6.5 RPM would make for a great backup travel rifleJim, funny you should mention that. Or you can use a 280AI and cover everythingThe problem I have is I already have rifles and back-up rifles:
The 300 WM has as much recoil as I want to endure. So, I don't even want anything bigger.
- 300 WM for elk
- 300 WSM for elk
- 7mm RM for deer and antelope
- 7mm WSM for deer and antelope
- 358 Win. for stalking through the woods
- 6.5 Creedmoor for training and plinking and loaner for deer hunting
- 22 LR for varmints
I don't have much interest in anything smaller than the 6.5 CM. Maybe, I could pretend I could use a 25 caliber for something...
Maybe a back-up to the back-up?The problem I have is I already have rifles and back-up rifles:
I got rid of my 280AI years ago. I felt like the 7 mag was so close to the same but with a little more. At the time my 7 mag was a great little Sako that was very accurate. I have always had a 7 mag as a primary or back up since then.. today it’s a Tikka T3X. The .284 line of caliber options is easily my favorite though. Not sure if I’ll get another AI though lol.Or you can use a 280AI and cover everything
