The draws should be over by now . where are you guys going , and what are you hunting this season ? I always enjoy reading about other guys plans . Good luck and safe travels

I somehow managed not to draw a mule deer tag in Oregon, Idaho, Montana or Wyoming. I did manage to draw elk tags in Oregon and Idaho. Thinking about going over to the west side of the state and hunt Blacktails, that is an over the counter hunt. It’s been years since I hunted them but one of my nieces is a forester over there and has offered to guide me. She cant say that without laughing. It would be fun. I may just hunt bears and scout for elk however. The unit I’m hunting elk in Oregon is essentially my backyard. I can throw my kit in my truck and be driving into the unit in about 10 minutes. The Idaho unit is 3 1/2 hours from the house.
My dogs are too old for much of a hunt anymore and most of the areas we have hunted chukar and pheasants for the last 60 years has burned to the ground this week. Will go look for pockets of ground that may hold chukars and will definitely have to go explore some new places.
I’ll do a little exploring down in Arizona for quail if /when we get down there this year. It’ll be important to stay near home this fall.

Due to the accident, my hunting plans for this fall have been cancelled.
Should be able to do some load development for the new 25 Creedmoor!:D
But at least we had a great hunt is South Africa before the accident! 😎

I would love to be able to get out for a couple of days late this fall with my NIB Rem 870 Wingmaster in 28 ga to get a few ruffies, but we will see how the shoulder recovers (cannot shoulder it yet), and how my mobility is come late Sept/early October. (Still not weight bearing on the leg yet...but should be soon!)

With good physio and rehab of the injured leg and shoulder, I hope to be back in SA next May to be able to save on my flights from the cancelled trip home in May (only have 1 year to rebook), and try to find that eland that eluded me!
Susan says she won't be going back (not just because of the accident, as she does not fly well, and this trip was hard on her in that regard.)
But she says I must find a travel companion! Anyone looking at a hunt in SA for next May???
Cool old historic Lodge, great people, country and game!

Just hunting deer here this year as we didn’t draw MI Bear or Elk and WY Moose or Antelope.
We did hunt TX hogs in April and will be back next year.

No special tags for me, general Deer and Elk here in Montana, daughters are waiting to hear on antelope still should know in a week or so. Try to get out for a few birds.

This is the first time in a long time I currently only have 1 elk tag. I will try to fix that this week when they offer the returned non-resident tags for residents to purchase. The kids will have antelope tags and a couple deer tags plus their normal elk tags.

Another big goal of mine is to become a good wild game cook. I think the better I can cook and utilize meat, the more confidence I'll have in wanting to go out and take multiple deer which is something that's needed around here because they are wildly overpopulated. Also watching videos and learning how to butcher my own deer instead of spending a bunch of money at the processor.

That’s a great goal to have!
Honestly though, we just use the meat we get from the deer that we hunt, the same as one would with beef for the most part.
We make bourguignon, Guinness stew, chilli, corned venison, and my wife likes it sliced thin and marinated in Montreal steack seasoning, and pan fried in butter. There are many ways to prepare it.

My plans this season - a hunt in NC, probably my last travel hunt, as it’s getting expensive. Then hunting here around home.
I applied for a Doe tag in a WMU I hunt near me, but was denied. So I will just Buck hunt around there, and get my Does in NC, the Great Lord willing.

I treat my venison like beef as well. My primary deer hunting area is a swamp so the fat picks up some of the aquatic plant flavor leading to it needing just a touch more attention to preparation than regular store bought beef or lamb.

Whereabouts is your primary hunting area that it requires an application for a doe tag? I assume the application is more to limit the number of hunters rather than to save the does?

I would go To South Africa just as an observer-maybe shoot one or two new things while I’m there but mostly just follow quietly with a camera. . .
I start in a couple weeks with archery spike only elk tag-it’s multi season so I can hunt it later with firearms if I need to. Can bowhunt mule deer at the same time and that is also multi season but I hope to use my rifle in October.
Daughter wants help with a wyo antelope tag ( I paid for the tag so I get to go). She is also pregnant and wants extra help.
Rifle hunts in October if needed and birds through the whole fall.
November swan tag and I bought an Idaho whitetail muzzleloader tag again this year. Then ducks till it closes in January. There is always something to be doing!
