Thinking about a carbon rifle for next year, one quite like the Nosler 48 Mountain. Will be hunting Mule deer Elk & Antelope here in Montana, the possibilities for a long shot are definitely in the mix, for me that would max out at 700 to 800 yards. I have a reliable LRHS 4.5-18 ×44 that I'll mount on it, so I'll be able to dial in for drop.

Planning on practicing at distance & using my data for the drop chart

What about those 2 cartridges? Among others these both would probably fit the bill. Any users?

Shot some of both and in my opinion the 28 with a great 175/180 is king of the heap. Less recoil than the 30 and higher BC bullets until you get into the real heavy stuff and even then it’s not much better.

Just for grins compare a 175 ABLR at Nosler’s top speed with a 210 ABLR in a 30. See where 2000FPS occurs. Energy may be a touch more from the 30 but that 175 Nosler kept about 2k will sure fetch stuff and resist wind drift while reducing recoil.

The stock design really helps to dampens the recoil. The Nosler brake tames it well but it's not bad with out the brake. Sue shoots it wearing a tee shirt. It's her favorite rifle.

The problem with the 28 is its really hard on barrels. Probably 5-6 years ago it was the rage for hunters but at under 200 rounds the throats would start creeping forward., to the tune of .010 or so every 100 rounds. That makes keeping loads in tune really hard when your chasing the lands. The trend after that was the 300 Norma Imp. The throat creep was more like .002/100 rounds even though it had 7-8 grains more capacity.

The 30 Nosler with a long throat will shoot 215 Bergers around 3040fps in a 26" barrel using H1000 Plenty good enough for the critters your after. I've killed a lot of elk and there is no replacement for displacement. .30's kill better then 7's.
