Model 48 Mountain™ Carbon Rifle (Left-Handed) | 28 Nosler

And on that note...with a 7mm Rem Mag and WSM, you don't have that next step up in performance...you gotta fill that gap!

You know, you are correct. I don't have the "next step up in performance". That is also true with my 2013 truck, my Windows 10 computer, and my 74 y.o. body. Oh, and my RCBS Rock Chucker press is from around 1980. I guess I have a lot of "stepping up" to do. I am getting tired just thinking about it.

Well, I decided to pass on the LH Nosler Mountain Carbon Rifle is 28 Nosler.

Instead. I decided to have my gunsmith build me a 6.5-284 Norma on a LH Rem. 700 donor that he has.

We are still discussing all of the specifications. The donor rifle is on consignment with my gunsmith so right now I am waiting on the final purchase price confirmation, total of transfer fees, etc. to close on the purchase of the rifle. The rifle is an older LH BDL chambered in 30-06. The barrel and the stock are pretty rough, but I am getting it for a very low price.

We are going to buy a new custom chamber reamer and get to set the specs. We are going to use a couple of long, heavy bullets to measure set the length of the free-bore.

This is NOT intended to be a hunting rifle. I have enough hunting rifle cartridge combinations as it is. This will be strictly recreational target shooting use. I can tell Joe wants to build a true shooter. He builds target rifles for some very competitive shooters. He has a couple in process right now. So, we are having discussions on barrel contours. He wants to go with a heavier contour than I do. However, I still want a "hunting weight" rifle, even if I don't use it for hunting.

Amount things in discussion are:
  • SS Douglas XX air gauged barrel - maybe a Douglas #3 contour
  • Fast twist - probably 1/8.
  • Convert to a Sako style extractor
  • Convert to a 3-position wing style safety to match my Win. 70's.
  • Bushing the firing pin hole
  • Bell & Carlson stock. However, Joe thinks we should go with a lighter stock and a heavier barrel.
  • Threaded barrel for muzzle break and protective cap. No spec., on the muzzle break yet.
  • Steel bottom metal
  • Trigger Tech trigger
Joe already had Norma brand 6.5-284 brass on hand. :)

That is all I can think of at the moment.

As always, I am open to suggestions.

Should be a solid rig for shooting or hunting.
FWIW, my 280 AI is a Hart #5 contour with 6 flutes. The 338 RUM is a Krieger #5 contour with 8 flutes. Both have the stiffness of a #5 but have the weight of a #4.
