What Are Your Most Accurate Sporting Hunting Rifles

All of my rifles (Sako 85) shoot equally well and will print "minute of pig", "minute of buffalo" or "minute of dog" from any shooting position and any reasonable distance. As far as paper targets go, the accuracy is around 0.5-0.7in 5 shot groups at 100yds. IMO, paper accuracy is somewhat...

    Australian - Lithgow - 303 Lee Enfield No1 Mk3 1919 ShtLE

Larakanism was probably their greatest claim to fame and contempt for incompetence... Generally considered an undisciplined lot, they were one of the few soldiers to not cop too much from their officers. The British (and later, others) had a habit of using them as cannon fodder and scape goats...

    Australian - Lithgow - 303 Lee Enfield No1 Mk3 1919 ShtLE

Bullet, That is indeed a fine looking example. If the verdict is that it is worth too much too use, then perhaps looking for another example in good but not necessarily original condition might be an option. At least in my part of the world later models are common and inexpensive. Cheers

I don't expect anything for "free", but it sure is nice when a company backs their product to the end. Cheers

30-06 150gr FMJ for wild boars

Mike, FWIW, I can understand your wifes (probable) POV regarding [edit] heads. I have only ever shot for meat or pest control and never for trophies. To me the whole idea of hanging the head of an animal on a wall is somewhat grotesque. In that regard I might be the odd one out in these...

Mike, I know what you mean about meat fairies. I have met cattle station cooks like that. Go figure... :? Crazy thing is that my GF was one of the very few woman that ever worked in the slaughter room of the local meat works before it closed. When it comes to slaughtering and butchering the...

30-06 150gr FMJ for wild boars

Mike, It is a matter of compromise more than tolerance. We have a lot in common, just not the guns. I started shooting again about 6 years after we met knowing full well that she was not keen on them... and I do live in her house. HST, she doesnt mind the $2000+ pa saving on lean beef (wild...

Well there is a bonus... I don't bring guns or any gun related materials into the house... or even into the yard. I own the property next door and that is as close as they get because my gf won't stand for it. Cheers

    Alliant powder

That is exactly what I did (starting last year). All of my powder comes from ADI and for each cartridge I have a choice of three or four powders (depending on availability). That is enough choice when starting out and figured that there was little point in complicating load development with...

Interesting attitudes... :) FWIW, over the past 12 months I have fired over 2000 rounds (in the field) with all but a dozen or so going into ferals including pigs. I am a firm believer in the humane destruction of pests and having seen what target and military bullets do, I will only use...

If I Could Add One Rifle to My Safe...

For personal (ie not work related) use I already have it, but not sure which... A year ago I would have said 308Win, but now I am not so sure. It'd be either 308Win or 260Rem Sako Stainless Varminter probably with a 20" barrel. I already have the 308 in 20" & 24" and the 20" tips the scales a...

I will never own a rifle chambered in........

Interesting views... My current arsenal is a bunch of Sakos in 223Rem, 260Rem, 308Win, 338Fed. A 25-06 is the oddity that sees little use. I have no interest in magnums no matter how the name is dressed or barrel burners. ie The sort of rifles that will last less than 2000 rounds before...

    338 cal 200 gr E-Tip

Thanks JD, As I suspected, your 300yd velocity is around 150fps more than I get at the muzzle with a 200gn AB. It'd be interesting to see what the E-Tip would be doing at 2000fps. I have no real reason to change as the AB and heavier Partitions serve me well taking down large ferals at ranges...

    338 cal 200 gr E-Tip

JD, Have you got any info on the impact velocity for the 300yd test? I'd work it out myself but I am nowhere near my ballistics calculator. Any thoughts on the minimum velocity to achieve reliable expansion. I am thinking my 338 Federal helicopter gun which is somewhat challenged for outright...

Coyote Hunting with a .223 Remington

I have used 40gn BTs at 3700fps (Federal ammo - their quoted velocity) on dogs usually in the 14-20kg range (coyote size) to 200m. Exits were inconsistent but the result was always the same for the dog. It appeared that the bullets were exploding on impact. I recovered a few bullets all without...

    New Sako 85; Caliber??

Ldg, I consider your choice a good one. :) I have no experience with Talley or Leupold mounts, but FWIW, I have had no issues with the Optilock rings and bases on three Sakos. Cheers
