As soon as I can I will post a pic of the last range day 6 shots prone no rests. I am very impressed and so glad to find a great recipe for the old BLR.
I have found that I am getting 1" - 6 shot groups at 100yds with 41.8grs IMR8208XBR with 165gr Nosler Parts in my old .308 BLR. After 2.5yrs of many powder load trials I have finally found this old girls sweet load. I see some very great looking targets in this thread. Great shooting guys.
I have not shot a lot of 165gr's out of my '06, but I can not beat the IMR4350 and currently H4350 with a 5 shot grouping under .75" with 180gr NP. Never had the need to change from these powders.
Did some measuring today. I chamber seated a bullet today to see what the OAL total was to the lands in my Browning BLR. I measured 2.912" OAL to lands. The magazine length is 2.895" OAL. I guess there is no way to be 100 off the lands for my OAL. I think that I might have to try 2.800" again...

I would be inclined to look for a second node as Scotty suggests. If there is no difficulty extracting at the charge of 42.5 grains, I would step up in half grain increments to look for a second node. There is no question but that your groups at either 39.5 or 40.0 grains are decent...
I did leave it in overnight and the patch came out a nice beautiful blue color. I will most likely be doing it again to make sure fully cleaned out. This is amazing to see what comes out even after I have always used brushes and Hoppes religiously.
Well I think I have found a powder that I can and seems to work well in an old Browning BLR .308. I finally found a pound of powder IMR8208XBR and then started to make up some test loads. I have not changed the OAL at all with bullet seating. I headed to the range with Osprey78 and had mixed...
Well I finally bit the bullet and decided to try some Wipeout on my Browning BLR .308 to clean before I try a ladder test with IMR8208XBR powder (which I have never tried before). Now this rifle is not as easy as a bolt action to spray the Wipeout in, but it went in. Immediately coming out the...
Yes Dan, we can get him to change. I work on it everyday. He will crack sooner than later. Nosler Partitions are what all other bullets are measured against. Osprey78 you know you want to, and now I will get help from others to bring you to the Partition side.
So far it has dropped its fair share of deer, black bears, elk and moose (a few heads off of grouse). I have always felt very comfortable hunting with this rifle and load, especially around here where I have run into grizzly bears. I have also felt so comfortable that it has been with me on...
Well after 30yrs of owning my Winchester Model 70 Westerner 30-06 I finally know some velocities from my handloads. Thank you Osprey78 for taking it with you when I could not get a "Slomba Day" (inside joke) to the range. I have always been curious what the velocity was from some of my loads...
Yup, perfectly put. One step at a time I will get you over to the PT side. I have also read that the Barnes sometimes just don't shoot worth a darn out of some rifles. I guess really that can be said of any bullet, but I have not heard of a PT that does not shoot well. It is the bullet that...
Thank you for the info. I am excited to try some loads with this powder. I have read that the 8208 powder was not affected by temp changes. Here is what I found from IMR's info on the 8208.
There’s no Target too small for IMR 8208 XBR
IMR’s 8208 XBR is a rifle powder based on an old...
Ok now don't get me laughing about that one again (I have hit myself with the stapler before). I thinks there still a red trail along the walk to the targets. Just remember to keep fingers to oposite side when stapling the targets on Wednesday Osprey78. Sure wish I could go.
I have never had any problems with new or once fired brass shooting well thru my 06'. That being said if you are going on a big hunt like you say for piece of mind I would load up shoot them then reload and check again. I think this would put your mind at ease and be able to think only of the...
Well, thank you Osprey78 for spotting some powder at a local gun show. I managed to buy 2 1lb canisters of powder that have made my choice easier for me. I have a 1lb of IMR4895 and a 1lb of IMR8280 XBR. Now the fun will begin at the range again. I love it.
Is it possible to get someone to...
Here is some photos from a day at the range with Osprey78. I loaded and shot some of my dads old IMR4350 load just to see what it would do. The H4350 was just for my curiousity. I then have gone back to try what I have left of IMR4895 powder. I had no luck with Varget and am unable to get...
