Well after 30yrs of owning my Winchester Model 70 Westerner 30-06 I finally know some velocities from my handloads. Thank you Osprey78 for taking it with you when I could not get a "Slomba Day" (inside joke) to the range. I have always been curious what the velocity was from some of my loads. Never really worried about it as the rifle did exactly what was requirred of it every time.

Winchester Model 70 Westerner 30-06
55.5grs IMR4350, 180gr Nosler Partion Protected Points, CCI200 primers, Norma brass

2632
2586
2606
2590

Avg 2603 fps

Winchester Model 70 Westerner 30-06
55.0grs H4350, 180gr Nosler Partion Speer Points, CCI200 primers, Norma brass

2627
2617
2623
2606

Avg 2618 fps

I have currently use the H4350 loads with the Nosler Partition Speer Points and not because they are better just that is was more availability. I was having more trouble finding the Protected Points lately. Next up is my continued effort to find a load for my .308.

Seems like 2600 is a great speed and I would imagine that'll handle everything in your area without drama. I think the Federal 180 PT's factory ammo runs about the same speed and my pops killed a whole lotta stuff with his 30-06 over the years. Sounds like a great load.

So far it has dropped its fair share of deer, black bears, elk and moose (a few heads off of grouse). I have always felt very comfortable hunting with this rifle and load, especially around here where I have run into grizzly bears. I have also felt so comfortable that it has been with me on many grizzly bear hunts. No grizzlies to date, but one day that will happen. I was always told that it did not matter how fast the bullet was going it was how hard it hit while staying together. That is why I have been shooting Nosler Parttitions for over 30yrs now. Can not dispute the fact that they work time after time.

N06,

Pretty much correlates to what I get from H4350 and 180g bullets.

My standard is 57.5g of that powder now which gets me about 2750fps, but I'm wagering you'd not be able to tell the difference between my load and yours in the field.

Thanks for sharing.

That is a great load. It will take care of anything in NA with proper shot placement.

Kind of fun to know the velocity isn't it?

Like you, I've got some rifles that go way back, with a lot of use over a lot of years. For years, even decades I was only able to estimate velocity from loading manuals, and what I observed re bullet drop. That actually worked just fine.

It was however, a lot more fun once I started using a chronograph and knew what velocity I was working with!

Regards, Guy

Gee, I couldn't imagine who that line was meant for...

You're welcome.

Osprey, I believe that you should join the club as everyone knows that Partitions are the way  most of the time!!

Blessings,
Dan

Yes Dan, we can get him to change. I work on it everyday. He will crack sooner than later. Nosler Partitions are what all other bullets are measured against. Osprey78 you know you want to, and now I will get help from others to bring you to the Partition side.

Everyone should splurge and get a chronograph. It just adds more to the adventure of loading our own and provides so much information. I cannot believe I went without one for so long.

You should be ashamed of yourself. You know maybe, just maybe i put in some random numbers on the Chrony readings...

I believe that I have got Osprey78 cracked and has now ordered some Nosler Partitions. I know Osprey78 that you will never look back once you have sent some PT's down range. Welcome to the Nosler side.

06, I knew you would be able to turn him . Now I am wondering what he thinks of the 35 Whelen 8)?

Blessings,
Dan

Yep the northern enablers are fast at work. This site is like poison when it comes to that. Mike tried to give you fair warning!!! Just give in we haven't seen to many new rifles lately to drool over. Maybe a custom stainless M70 in a Supergrade stock in 35 Whelen I think a fair majority of us would drool over it!!!

I do believe the universe is coming back into harmony. Thank you, Jake.

Let's just say that even though they are 2 different creatures, the Nosler Custom Competitions were always in my sights for my new target rifle, they impressed me so much that I decided to give the NP's a shot.

My next rifle will probably not be a Whelen though. I'm sure they are great though.

Once you go Whelen, you will never go back.

I can understand that.... Most people enjoy hunting so much that hunting with a Whelen takes the fun right out of it.. Darned animals just lay right down when they know there is a Whelen in the woods!
