35 Whelen AI bullet speeds w/newer powders

Now that guys have been working with the newer niche powders (CFE 223, 8208, TAC, RL17, others) in the 35 Whelen/AI, is there any powder pushing a 200 grain Barnes TTSX or 200 grain Accubond reliably and safely at 3000 fps, specifically in the AI but also wondering if the std Whelen shows better...

    Brass Failure

Hello Rodger! Could the annealing be contributing? Like, the line where annealing tapers off is causing the fracture? Too much annealing (after every firing)? I have loaded brass umpteen times (35 Whelen RP headstamp) over the course of the past 14 years, with A LOT of load development...

Shooting factory this year .358 Win. Update.

Here is the bullet test post I made a while back and some old style X recoveries from elk, with a 200 TTSX for visual comparison. viewtopic.php?f=55&t=31588 Enjoy!

Shooting factory this year .358 Win. Update.

Nice bull, I too am a big fan of the Barnes X bullets from my 35 Whelen AI. Fast or slow, they seem to expand similarly in terms of diameter, so don't get too concerned about how much they appear to have or have not expanded. On the 6 elk I have taken with the Barnes original style X (2 with...

    Powder question

Let's look at this from a percentage standpoint. With 4.35 grains being average for the old lot and 4.45 being the average from the new lot, you are looking at 2% variation. No concern, I would not consider that "varying this much from lot to lot". Have you checked velocity? Is pressure up...

    Range day #3 ( long winded )

Thanks for the report, TD. I took a muley buck with my 35 AI a couple weeks ago during 2nd rifle season, shooting the 200 Barnes TTSX. 100 yd broadside high lung shot from my sight in of 3" high at 100 yds. I held dead on midway up behind the front leg line, so the high hit was right where the...

    30-06 with 125 Grain Bullets

Good choices all on those powders! I like IMR3031 in light-for-caliber loads. For the record in case someone comes along later and isn't reading carefully or knowledgeable enough to understand... I want to make clear that the powder weights I used for comparison in the post above are based...

    30-06 with 125 Grain Bullets

First things first... That is a beautiful whitetail buck! Really nice body size and a great shot was made to harvest the critter. On the topic of lower recoil, I put up a load for my Ruger M77 MKII 30/06 with 38/H4198/150 Barnes TTSX for my son to elk hunt with his first year. Charge...

    Ethics Question

Sorry to hear of the broken promise... Just got back from second rifle season here in Colorado over the weekend where I made that agreement with a friend and told him he had first crack at an elk if one showed while we were together. If multiple animals showed, he got first pick and we would...

200 grain Rhino - 35 whelen faster vs slower

I know this post is a bit late to the party... The Rhino looks similar to a Trophy Bonded bullet with the solid shank and bonded lead core up front. Sounds like the velocity window is narrow though which is a bummer. Hope they get it worked out.

Washington State Moose, 26 Nosler. Bullet pic added

Nice Accubond performance. What velocity did the bullet carry to the distance you shot the moose?

    Elk knockdown

Ummmm... 35 Whelen/AI. 10 elk say "knock down"... :) And I added a Muley buck to the list of critters succumbed by the Whelen AI over the weekend. 200 gr TTSX broadside at 100 yds. Nice .358 entry hole, between the ribs and was expanded as it went out the other side leaving no doubt the...

    Velocity increase over time?

Bonding of jacket to case neck is your culprit as was shared. It bumps pressures in my 35 Whelen AI so each year I "crack" the seal by running the rounds into the seating die. Never affected accuracy and pressure comes right back to normal.

    270 win, 130 partition, w760

Not directly related to W760, but thought i would share. I did some informal temperature sensitivity testing years ago, and it was easy to observe that W748 (at that point in time, could be a newer formulation now) lost velocity at colder temps. Back in the day, I was neurotic about that kind...

Load workup for .280 Remington with 150gr pt

Loaded the 160 gr Partition for my fathers 280 Rem (7600 pump). The detachable magazine is the limiting factor for OAL, so IMR4350 got the nod for the sake of seating the bullet fairly deeply and not compressing the powder much. Superb elk round from that 22" bbl at 2820 fps.

    Range Day 35 AI

Hey TD, good results from the range. I actually like what you got with RL17/250 gr Partitions! That's a solid 2700 fps from a reasonably aerodynamic bullet. And 250 grains... Thumper. I have had a trip to the range and looks like the QL predictions for my gun for the 200 TTSX with...

    Long throats?

I seat the 200 TTSX at 3.390" for my 35 Whelen AI (dictated by the magazine), 3.475" is OAL with the bullet touching the lands. This equates to .085" off the lands. Barnes suggests .050" off the lands. The 200 TTSX shoots 2.25" groups at 300 yards, tears a large ragged hole with the load at...

    QL Request 35 Whelen

Thank you for the QL on the XLC! The velocities don't appear to be higher than a standard 225 grain X bullet in terms of what QL is saying. I gather the 77.2 gr H2O capacity of my fired 35 AI case was used? A request, please, for QL using the original 225 X bullet with either IMR 4064 or...

    QL Request 35 Whelen

Here is a unique QL request for my 35 AI. -I would like a QL for the 225 Barnes XLC (blue coated) using IMR 4064 and IMR 4320. Interested how that bullet is accounted for by QL, as it easily reduces pressures with equal powder charges based on my experience and allows for a legitimately...

    225 Partition - 35 Whelen est 2700fps

Look at the base of that recovered bullet, dimpled heavily from the compressed powder under it, IMO.
