How do you determine how much gun is enough

There has been a few threads lately on which guns are suitable for WT deer and other game. What do you guys consider when selecting a round to use on a specific game?? There are some that work in optimum conditions and then the others that ruin half of your meat, lets hear bout them. JT.

    To Six Millimeter, or Not?

It is enough, but falls into that shot placement crucial spot. Properly used it is enough for alot of game. I'd have to say that there are times, particulaly with younger hunters or inexperianced hunters, that a buck larger than what they are used to will present a shot and the hit is less...

    We had a good Weekend ! - 2 Bucks

Looks like a great family hunting trip, good for you guys. May there be many more. It's memories like that that make this sport all its own. JT

    Couple coyotes over the weekend

100 yotes, man you've helped keep the deer population intact. That is impressive. I think I may be 1 shy of 10, unless you count a couple that I found with a bumper..... www.herd.com JT.

    .223 rem on WT Deer

Good choice to stay with the 30 cal vs a 223. I've had a few long days tracking deer hit with 22-250's. I'll agree that respect for the game animal requires a bit more gun. I'm really fond of the 257 wby for WT deer and I load mine a bit light. Most of the loads I use could be duplicated in...

    Lever action 338 win mag?

Of course, that has nothing to do with a 338 Lever or BLR. I don't think that one exists, but I'm sure that Pac-Nor or shilen could make you a prefit barrel to install on a 7mm rem BLR. I don't know of any production 338 Win Mag levers, but keep looking. You'll either like the idea enough to...

    Lever action 338 win mag?

The BLR is availible in 358 win, & 450 Marlin, as well...... I beleive that the 450 is not in production anymore, but there is a few around. I think that would make great use of a 300-350 grain partition. Of course, if you've got a 45-70 it would be a serious overlap, but if not would be a...

    To Six Millimeter, or Not?

I can see no trouble with a 243 on WT deer. I loaded a few rounds for a buddy with 90 grain BT's and the damage they caused on a deer is fearsome for the amount of bullet/energy. My uncle hunted deer with a tang Ruger 77 in 243 for many years and killed around 40-50 of them with that rifle...

    WT buck 2009

I dressed him in the yard. With the luxary of a skid steer field dressing is only a worst case scenario. If I do it in the yard I generally will skin out and then remove the head and remove the entrails last. IT gets alot less hair on the meat. Somebody hit a doe crossing the road onto my...

    WT buck 2009

Well, it isn't huge, but it is a decent 4X4 and it will be tasty. First decent buck since 05. Shot at 50yds broadside, with my grandpa along for the fun. Cleaning wasn`t so much fun, it was -26 C this morning when I shot it. Browning A bolt 7mm STW with 3.5-10X40 VX III 160 Accubond over...

    The world we live in

That would suck to loose a 4 wheeler, rifle and pistol. Hopefully, he gets them back. May the thief's road be rocky and full of thorns for his trouble. I'm always paranoid about that sort of thing happening. I had a lock punched out of my car door a couple years back when I bought a CZ550. It...

    243Win vs 6mmBRM. Safety?

I'd be pretty cautious substituting data in a wildcat based on a 30-30 case. The 30WCF case isn't rated for all that much pressure, I haven't got a SAAMI rating, but it would be worth checking. If it were, it's performance would be almost equal to a 308 Win. Just my 2 cents, JT.

    NIce boar as well, congrats.

    Accubond performance on Boar!

In reality, I never had huge problems arise from other bullets despite a couple bullet failures and jacket seperations. IE, the bullet fell apart, but the deer was recovered. However, I get better, more consistent accuracy from Nosler plastic(poly) tipped bullets and bang flop results on game...

Reasons for keeping the 300 gr. .458 nosler partition

    Busted handloading bench

Perhaps install dowels from the front with glue and then glue and clamp the crack, followed by installing the metal press mount with a bottom plate and or just two pieces of flatiron after it dries for a couple days. JT.

Large Bob Cat and the 358Win

Congrats on a fine trophy and the opportunity to take an interesting animal. JT

    What would you build?

I'd concur with either a 375 H&H, which is only so and so interesting as you already have a 375 Ruger, but is a perfect match for the action if you want it to fit into the era the action was made. OR, more to my taste, a 358 Norma is a very interesting & unique round perfectly suited to a full...

    Question on taking does/female animals

This year I'm after a buck as the winter was pretty bad and alot of the younger does and fawns were "winter killed". Most years I do shoot a doe for meat and have no qualms about it. Course there was a couple winters when I was a kid that all we ate was deer meat and that was not by choice, so...
