Pretty simple. The 270 drives its most popular weight bullet (130) to magnum velocities without magnum recoil or need to handload or use special high bc bullets to get great ballistics or performance down range. It is a pretty good recipe for most hunting. New bullets have only made it better...
I would try a different powder. H4831 is normally go to with 150s but maybe something else will work better. Lot of options these days for powders but who knows what is available

1-10 is fine for this bullet. Of course your rifle may not be 1-10 but that is standard 270. ABLR seem to be pretty finicky in general. Try seating deeper - .1 or .15 off even if close is not working. In general I have had few instances where a historically accurate rifle really hates the...
I will also point out that if your buddy’s “real world” .308 velocities are faster than manual load velociities he is at higher pressure. Velocity is not free, even if no pressure signs…
With 24” barrel it is no problem to get 3150-3200+ With 130s and 2950-3000+ with 150s these days. I just used alliant published load data and got just over 3200 fps with 130 partitions and RL16 in my kimber 84l. I went with 1 gr below max as slightly more accurate and still at 3140 fps. One...
The 270 is alive and well. The newest version of H4831 is not the velocity champ in the .270 anymore, but is less sensitive to temperature. That being said, it is still an excellent choice and depending on the manual gives anywhere from 3000-3150 fps with 59-62 gr of powder. There are several...
I have had 3 kimbers - 270 WSM Montana, 300 WSM Montana, and 270 84L Classic Select. All have functioned great and shoot great. I recently sold the 300 WSM, but still have the others. I have bought them all though the years. Apparently there are some lemons out there from what other posters...
The 160 is a semi-spitzer, but it does offer a reasonably high BC (.434) in the range of some "long range" partitions such as the 120 .257, 130 .277, 140 .284, and 165 .30 cal. If I wanted to use the 160 .270 bullet, I wouldn't worry about the shape being too blunt for long range work.

Towsley is about as close to a modern day Elmer Keith as we have (this is not an insult). Towsley is a big bore guy and takes shots at the .270 every now and then. I remember the article, but thought the 140 bonded bullet he mentioned was the Remington CL Ultra and said he was dissapponted...
O'Connor used the 130 weight for most of his work, but often used 150s when heavier game was the only thing on the menu. For example, O'Connor was a dedicated sheep hunter and he liked the flat trajectory of the 130s for that purpose. On the same pack trip for Sheep, O'Connor would bump off a...
Actually, the Nosler Patition was around during both of their primes. I think O'Connor got bullet construction a bit more than Keith did. O'Connor quickly adopted the Nosler Partition for his .270 work, especially after seeing the 130 version consistently exit on game like Zebra on one of his...
Interestingly, O'Connor and Keith were not all that different on caliber capability. What O'Connor & Keith really differed on was caliber recommendations. Let's take one of Keith's most hated, the .270 Winchester on Elk. In one of Elmer's early books he said the .270 killed Elk like lightning...
I have 2 .270 WSMs. One is a stainless M70 that I've had a few years, the other is a Kimber Montana that I have not worked with yet. The M70 .270 WSM has shot everything very well from 110 Barnes TSX to 150 Swift AF. I have had no problems meeting expected velocities with any weight, which is...
My favorite powder for 150s in the .270 is H-4831SC. I generally load 56-57 gr. Generally gives close to 2850 in a 22" barrel and 2900 in a 24" barrel, give or take a few fps depending on your gun and components used.
