I've recommended the 35 W twice to friends who were going brown bear hunting; the first time I worked up loads with the 225 gr Bitterroot at 2600 fps. No problem on a nice brownie.
The second my buddy asked for suggestions on bullets for his Whelan so I suggested the 225 Northfork which worked...
First, there is no expanding bullet that is a guaranteed pass though on all game animals all of the time under all conditions
That said if he wants a higher likelihood of exits from his 300 magnum he does not need less velocity....he needs a bullet built for deeper penetration.
Energy is a formula that attempts to quantify killing power because someone in the past figured it was easier than killing animals.....plus people get cold comfort using numbers to describe the differences in things.
But you can't determine anything about a wound channel created by a bullet by...
Guy lots of Partitions exit.....it's how they are designed to perform!
I do have more BBC's and Partitions here but simply have not photographed them.... (y)
More expansion and penetration.. :)
250 gr 375 from Alaskan Brown bear.Retained big frontal area (what kills) and 249 gr.
The first broke both shoulders and exited. This one stopped. The blood trail looked like someone dumped a bucket of red paint on the beach. But again it was not...
Expansion/penetration. Trauma and no blood trail required.Recovered by a pal;bull elk at 460 yards. 150 Swift SS II.
Expansion/ penetration;6x6 bull elk (mine). 160 Bitterroot form 7 RM.Recovered weight 159 gr. Length of neck.No exit and lots of trauma. No blood trail needed.
Preacher that's correct.
Remington already had pressure data for the Mashburn because Warren Page had them do the chronograph and pressure data for the cartridge; but I suspect they would have run into some intellectual property issues with Art Mashburn if they went that way. I bet no one...
Friends and I have killed lots of black bears with cartridges like the 270,280, 30/06 and 7 Rem Mag. We'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. They are not hard to kill but if the opportunity presents I like hitting them in shoulders to sort of hold them in place if you can.
The bullet on...
Truck Driver there is lots of dis-information out there.....
In any event it appears that Bowman, Leek, and Walker helped develop a winner. If restricted to one open country BG rifle and cartridge, for me the 7 Rem Mag would be the one.
If I didn't have a Mashburn that is......
As to who built the rifle for les Bowman, Im afraid Zeglin got it wrong; that is if you consider Les Bowman himself as a more reliable source.... :)
Anent the February, 1986 issue of American Rifleman, article entitled "The 7mm Rem Mag" co authored by Finn AAgaard and Les Bowman; page 22.

It seems the Mashburn was indeed all Art Mashburn;from some letters I have seen it appears Mashburn and others were not thrilled with the free bore of the 7mm Weatherby. Art Mashburn designed three belted 7mm's but the one we call the "Super' was the most efficient. That's the one used by Warren...
Nice thing about the Mashburn is that you don't have to push it to the floorboards to get good velocity.
I worked up to that 75.5 gr H1000 load when I built mine a few years ago. It works great with the 162 Amax,160 NPT,160 AB, and 160 BBC,all at around 3200 fps.
