I have this unit also and have nothing but praise with how well it cleans your brass, both inside and out and including primer pockets. No more dusty media!
I did some chronographing yesterday with this rifle and here are some preliminary results with IMR4895 and the Speer .323 170 gr. semi-spitzer. 39 gr.-2027fps; 41 gr.-2267fps; 43 gr. 2375fps average. Fired cases appeared normal and no visible signs of excess pressures. However, my bullets...
Thanks for the speedy reply on this, Dr. Mike. For now I will begin with IMR4895 and start out at about 39 gr. and gradually work up to maybe 43 gr. and see what I get for velocity with the short carbine barrel. I'll try to get a picture posted as well. I was worried that the slightly larger...
I recently picked up a nice 1908 Mannlicher Schoenauer carbine in 8x56M-S. Day before yesterday I got in my dies from the good folks at C-H4D and already have 25 cases formed and trimmed from 8X57 brass. What I need is some up-to-date reloading data for the 170 gr. bullets I plan to use. Any...
I think your idea would be a fun one but there might be other alternatives on how to go about it. Threading and chambering a barrel for a Savage is not difficult for any gunsmith with a good lathe and the knowledge of how to use it. Contoured barrel blanks are available in various weights from...
I haven't visited this blog for weeks now, so I don't know what rifle(Savage?), chambering, etc. you are talking about. Sounds like you are doing this correctly. Keep in mind that checking headspace in a bolt rifle is a "thumb and forefinger" operation, as in delicate. You have lots of camming...
Two of my favorite lever rifles. A Model 1886 Lightweight in .33 Win. and a standard grade Winchester Model 71 in .348 Win. I reload for both and am now working up some cast bullet loads for the .348.
R-10 Ross update: I recently completed some TLC on the old Ross. The stock finish was stripped and then the wood was given a good scrubbing with a nylon brush and household ammonia. That got most of the oil soaking and crud removed. That was followed up with some light rasp work and careful...
If you are the handyman type, you might check out that shotmaking device I have seen advertised in the past. That and a bucket of wheelweights should get you going. Use good ventilation when you do this though.
You need the inner magazine tube, Brownells part number 084-027-001, $19.99. The Nylon 66 has a unique follower and end cap, so I would order those two parts from Numrich. The inner tube will have to be cut to fit and you need to drill a small hole for the end cap cross pin. Good luck!
Here are a couple of photos of the R-10. I put eight rounds of factory Winchester ammo through it yesterday and the jury is still out on the rifles' accuracy potential. I plan to upgrade to better iron sights. Lot of fun to shoot though!
I took the rifle (serial #14178) out of the stock this morning and found a few interesting things. Stamped on the underside of the barrel near the receiver was 87 BR. Hand stamped on the underside of the receiver ring was "TF Arms Thief River Falls MN. I had to straighten out the metal...
This might get Dr. Mike's attention because he likes Ross rifles as much or more than I do. This rifle was in the Sidney, Nebraska Cabela's Gun Library and it followed me home. The R-10 is the plain-jane sporting rifle with the same multi-lug bolt as the M-10 .280 Ross, but having an exposed...
A factory magazine tube will be tough to find. However, Brownell's sells inner magazine tube kits and any gunsmith or do-it-yourselfer can cut one to fit. Use a caliper to measure the inside diameter of the buttstock tube and order accordingly. I see that Numrich has all of the inner magazine...
I don't see many posts dealing with the care and feeding of old military rifles. I get a great deal of fun with my 1903 Springfield, British Enfields, FN FAL, M1A, Garand, K31 and assorted Mausers. Two weeks ago a friend and I spent a fun morning shooting our British Enfields at steel targets...
Yep! Mounting a scope on this rifle will require a bolt handle job, either bending and forging the old handle or welding on a new handle. You will also have to install a new low safety because the old wing safety will not clear the rear end of the scope.
I would go with a barrel in 7X57, but first I would identify the make and model of the rifle. If it is an 1895 Chilean Mauser it probably has Ludwig Loewe, Berlin stamped on the left side of the receiver and has the Chilean crest on top of the receiver ring. Nicely made rifles. I have a...
Is it an older 99 with a lever safety or later model with tang safety? Rotary magazine or detachable magazine? Brass counter or aluminum? Walnut or hardwood stock and forend? Any idea what variation of 99 it is? eg. Featherweight, longer barrel version with schnabel forend? $600 sounds a...
This shortage of bullets might put bullet casting and swaging in a whole new light. Any of you old timers remember what the letters RCBS stood for? About all of the reloading industry got started during the tight years following WWII.
