I have a X Bolt Hunter and came up with a load using 130 SST's but wasn't super happy with the bullet performance on whitetail and since I am out of bullets I decided to pick up some 130 AB's. I was using IMR 4350 and it produced decent accuracy but velocities didn't seem that good (chrony was broke on the only chance I had to check velocity).

With the 130 AB's I was thinking of RL 19,RL22, or IMR7828. I really want to try MagPro but am having the hardest time finding anybody in my area (Charlotte, NC) that stocks it. They all say they can order it but I would have to pay the Haz Mat fee which I am not willing. Which would be good starting powder and load? Thanks in advance.

I'd say RL-22 and 7828. The 270WSM experts will be on to give you the straight and narrow. Welcome to the forum.

My load in 2 different Tikkas is Winchester brass Fed 215 primer Nosler 130 gr. AccuBond 64.5 grs IMR 4350 Over all length 2.90" 3330 FPS. Well under 1" at 100 yds. In fact I embarrased the guy next to me with his full custom AR15 very custom target rifle because 3 shot group ws in 1 cloverleaf hole. Of course luck had nothing to do with it.
Good Luck

I prefer RL19 in the 270WSM with the 130 AB, though RL22 will give you excellent results, as well.

I would run RL22/19 and not look back.

For 130 Accubonds, which would be better? 19 or 22?

I would try RL19 with the 130's. It is a little faster and will get you going pretty quick. RL19 always seems to work out pretty accurate for me also. Your rifle is an accurate rifle anyhow BC88, I think you'll just need to work up and see where it wants to group.

If you jump to 150's, then RL22 gets the nod from me.

I might have found a place near me that has MagPro in stock fairly regularly and if not he said when he orders more powder he will be sure to add MagPro to his list for me.

If that doesn't pan out then I will get some RL19 and work up a few different loads.

If you don't mind me asking, where have these numbers come from?

I was looking at Accurate's reloading data and its saying that 130 grain bullets have a max load of 75.5 grains and my rifle has a 23" barrel. Just not sure which numbers to go by for Magpro.

The Accurate data is pressure tested. If you follow the recipe precisely, you will get the results report, provided your chamber and barrel meet the same criteria employed in the tests. This is the reason hand loaders are trained to begin low and work up to verify they are not creating an unsafe situation. QuickLoad predicts pressure (and consequently velocity) given the lots provided to the creator of the program. Again, the one using QL is responsible to work up carefully in order to verify the loads selected are safe and meet the expected results. In your case, the rifle may perform quite well with a heavier charge of MagPro. However, it is also possible that your rifle will not permit you to use as high a load. You should, however, obtain similar results in terms of velocity and pressure. This is the joy of hand loading.

I always work my load up starting low but was just curious because I would hate to load towards max (~74 grains) according to Accurate but see too much pressure at 71 grains and be sitting with a bunch of bullets that I have to pull. I was just trying to figure out why the difference was there.

BC88, I would start low around 69 or so and come up in .5 or 1 grain increments, looking for accuracy, then, once you find that node, split it up and refine it. Then, if you have to, work seating depth, but I would bet you will find something that works pretty quickly. If your chronographing, you should see it steadily rising and your rifle and cases will tell you when you have maxed it out.

It is always easier to pull a few bullets. With the 270WSM I wouldn't feel too uncomfortable with coming up in 1 grain increments. Once you find the node, it probably won't be at the top charge anyhow. Work for accuracy and the speed will be there.

My sons 270WSM shot very well with RL22 and 130 AB's, but only on the lower end of the velocity scale. Increasing powder charges towards moderate and high end loads really opened up the groups. Not satisfied with less than 270WCF velocities, I started to experiment with different powders and bullets and finally settled on RL-19 and 130 BST's. This provided the greatest combo of accuracy and velocity.

Just out of curiosity, what did you not like about the SST's on Whitetails? I found this bullet is darn near perfect for Whitetails. I use SST's in my 270 Weatherby Mag on Whitetails and have had excellent results. Whitetail are very thin skinned and IMO, don't require a premium bullet to kill. If SST's are shooting that well in you gun, I would use them with ZERO reservation. Don't believe all the negative BS you read on the internet about SST's. I run them at almost 3500fps in the Weatherby and have always had complete pass throughs with half dollar size exit holes.
I'd say, save your money and stick with SST's or even BST's.

I liked the SST's pretty well but they seemed to be a little fragile. I shot a deer at fairly close range a couple years ago that was quartering away and I clipped the shoulder and the bullet seemed to come apart. Behind the shoulder the SST is like a bomb going off but at higher velocities they don't seem to do real well on bone. Maybe I had a lemon on that one shot.

The one place that had the best chance to have MagPro is out and said they probably will not be ordering any more powder for a couple weeks. So I guess I will pick up some Reloader 22 and give that a go.

I "might" use the 140's this year for elk out of my 270 WSM. Not sure yet, still on the fence.
