150 gr Nosler CT for 7mm Rem Mag

Hey Guys,

I have loaded the 150 gr Nosler CT Silver tip for my 7mm Rem Mag before. Last night I decided to use some new Rem nickle coated brass. It was my first time to use nickle coated brass. I ran the new brass through my sizing die just because I always do with new brass. It was a little difficult to size, but I thought that was just because it was stiffer than normal brass. When I loaded the Nosler bullets the brass actually scraped some very small amounts of the bullet jacket off in the loading process. What am I doing wrong??

Did you chamfer inside and outside?? Also, coated bullets are just a smidgen oversized, so sometimes the coating rubs off when you seat the bullet, as your describing. Other then that, I dont really know.

I did chamfer inside and out, and the scrapings seemed to mostly be the black coating. Maybe they are fine. It is not a max load. I have just never loaded the nickle plated brass before so I thought maybe I needed to do something special.

put a bronze or steel bore brush on a drill and polish the inside of the neck some. Along with chamfering, it should take care of your problem. Nickel is very rough. I did up some .257 Roberts cases and had to use a felt tip and polishing compound to get the inside of the necks smooth. That worked real good but took a lot of time. If your not using one, you might also try a VLD chamfer tool. That can make a little difference with a boat tail bullet also.

Thanks very much. That is a great idea. I have a Wilson inside neck reamer that I can use on the second reloading. Will that work or is that too much?

I shot the ones I had loaded today. They did OK. The primers didn't look like they had experienced too much pressure. I got a five shot one inch group. I plan to work with the load a little more.

I've done a whole lot of handloading for the .308 Win, enough to wear out several barrels... And a little bit of loading with nickle plated brass...

It's interesting. Doesn't seem to do anything except make handloading a bit of a pain, and make the resulting ammo really good looking! :grin: Found that I had to use a looser bushing in my Wilson neck sizing dies to make it work right.

I've got to admit that nickle brass and a moly coated bullet, or one of those blue coated Barnes XLC bullet is really cool looking. Is it any better? No. But it sure looks cool.

You are exactly right. I was just using the nickle brass to make it look good. It does look very good, but I am not sure it is worth the extra pain. After all the accuracy is what I am really after.

Lawson, I'v never used any of the neck turning devices so I can't say how it would work. I can also recommend a carbide expander. A regular expander is going to give up the ghost pretty quick with a steady diet of nickel cases.
The only real advantage of nickel cases is that they won't turn green in humid climates and may extract more reliably in nasty conditions. But they really do look good, don't they.

The carbide expander is a great idea. I have looked at them in the past and now I have a legitimate reason for buying one, or several for all my calibers.

Yes they do really look cool. I assume from your handle that you load 25-06. I do also. I have a load that I love that consistently shoots three shot, .25 inch groups. I use the Nosler 115 gr CT Ballistic silvertip, with 52.5 gr of RL-22, and a WLR primer. It is super! It is great on deer!
What is your favorite load?

I have quite a few different loads that shoot under .5 moa. I have used my 25-06 on everything from ground squirrels to black bears and everything inbetween with fantastic results out to 600 yards. I also love the 115g combined btip, but my particular winchester doesn't really like the bullet, best I can get is 3/4 moa. My winny loves the 100g btips, 110g AB's, 117g SBT's, and the 125g Wildcat ULD RBBT. SHoots them particular bullets anywhere from .25-.5". THis rifle is now my designated coyote rifle so it will be shooting 100g btips. In a backup situation, it will still kill deer like lightning to 500 yards. I love my 25-06's. If I was limited to one caliber, god forbid, it would be the 25-06
