The other day I drug my old 06 to the range, thought I might shoot her while letting the Jarrett cool. I have owned the old girl since Jr. High and for as long as I can remember I've gotten half inch groups with 150 grain ballistic tips. Just for fun I loaded 10 rounds with 150 grain ttsx, 52.5 4064, .05 off the lands. Trigger monkey got me and I pulled one of them but four of the five went into .155. Accounting for the called shot she still came in under .75
The ballistic tips came in at .418 until I lost my mind and tried to make it a 10 shot group.

Don't know that I need to change my deer load, the ballistic tip has kept me in venison for a long time, but now I may have to start screwing around trying to get 1/4 minute groups out of th bt.

Yeah, it is hard to take some of these old rifles delivering such great accuracy and being neglected because of the others that crowded them out. That sounds like a delightful old Ruger.

I had one of the early Ruger M77rifles in 6mm Rem. Every bullet that I tried in that rifle gave me great accuracy. The Sierra 85gr HP's and Nosler 90 gr Partitions gave me 1/2 groups to 200 yards. That was once I got the forward action screw set with the right torque.

Another fine target. It is hard to live with that sort of accuracy. The monotony of shooting and then being forced to skin and clean all that game is just devastating for a man who enjoys observing nature.

That's a great shooting rifle for sure! Seems like 150's and 4064 have always been a great combo in a 30-06.

Not too shabby for an old 30-06!! Who says the 30-06 isn't accurate, and in a Ruger to boot!! Look closely at that old girl and see how much the 30-06 just looks like a much larger .222 Remington and we all know how well the .222 shoots. I really really like the 30-06 and it's always been one of my all time favorites.

I am really fond of the old girl. Over the years I've sanded down the fore end, it is noticeably trimmer than a stock Ruger, also thinner in the wrist and re-checkered it. Over the years I've made a couple of shots I don't think I could have made with any other rifle because it seems to point all by itself when things happen fast.
Wouldn't trade her for nothing.
