2014 Oregon Bighorn Sheep Tag!!!

In the area around Mohagany Butte, scout the high ridges that break to the east S/E. Rose Briar spring, Sunrise spring. Saw sheep in that area deer hunting.

Thanks, Baltz526! What were you seeing for deer? Happy to share what I see with you if you're hunting in there again this year.

I hunt the Fort Rock unit for deer lately. I did kill a big bodied buck in the Mahogany Butte area one year. We killed a few on the top of Coleman Rim. As a mule deer area on a scale of 1-10 I would rate it a 3

Spent three days scouting during 4th of July week. Temperatures were in the mid-90's but we ended up seeing 69 sheep, 12 rams, most 5 years and younger. Water is definitely an issue this year.

Heading back this morning for another weekend of scouting. Hoping to get into some older rams this trip.

Good luck man. I cannot wait to see the pictures from that hunt! I hope you find some old rams. Good luck.

Are you doing any extra training for the hunt? Shooting extra? Sorry for all of the questions but I am trying to live vicariously through you with the sheep hunt!

And that is how its done. Knowing the lay of the land will definitely make a difference. Man, I'm excited for you. I know we're all pulling for you to tag out.

Just a few pics to give a sense of the country. Taking the bigger DSLR with telephoto lens today.

Have ya tried a 100 gr TSX in that 257 ? Mine shoots tiny groups outta my Vanguard ! Sounds like water is becoming an issue everywhere out west, hope that issue changes before your hunt and hopefully other hunters do not become an issue unless it helps you out ! I have a 270 Lazermark and a 257 Lazermark that I would not hesitate to take once I got them dialed in just a little more! Shot placement is more critical but that TSX will perform if ya hit him rite! Good luck and hope ya get some rain before your hunt! Just zoomed in on the goats as I thought the were deer at first
Nice group should be a great hunt! Hope ya find a wall hanger! Nice pictures and the terrain is not like the place I have seen some goats in Colorado! You would have hard time rappelling to get into them ! They were up on the side of Hard Scrabble Pass straight up vertical

Terry, here in Washington we've got goats, and we've got sheep...

Mountain goats, and Bighorn sheep. I got confused by your post. Are you talking about bighorn sheep, or mountain goats?

Then again, I confuse pretty easily!

I'd happily take a once-in-a-lifetime tag for either!

I wake up confused Guy  yes they were Rocky Mountain Big Horn's Sheep not goats but I do not know too much about goats other than they a free lawn mowers!

Not a good photo, but my son and I came across these mountain goats while on a backpacking hunt for mule deer in the Cascades. The goats were within rifle shot, but of course neither of us had the once-in-a-lifetime tag required.

STEEP country!

Not my tag but I would use Partition 165 gr bullets in the .30-06 for backup instead of the Gameking's for a once in lifetime tag? Just a thought

I have seen sheep right at the last picture with the creek headed north right past that rock. And on top of the high ridge in the left background. Never spotted that particular Guzzler.

Congratulations! Sheep tags are a rare gift. I drew in New Mexico in 2011, I understand the dizzy basket case thing, it can be very difficult to hold your life and job together over the summer with a sheep tag in your pocket:) Enjoy the scouting and the country, the sheep experience is something you will never forget. Dont stress on the rifle, any of those rigs you mentioned would be perfect, I used a 308 (mostly to horrify my brother and some of my magnum buff friends who consider it anemic), would probably take the 240 wby with 100 grain partitions or 280 with just about any bullet if I was to do it again, sheep dont seem to tolerate lead poisoning any better than a mule deer as far as I can tell. On a side note, is Fairplay elementary still in use? I did my grammar school time there, haven't been to Corvallis in years...

Thanks, Baltz. Thought you'd enjoy the mule deer picture from my last trip. Saw him in the same general area, just a bit to the west. Saw 37 sheep this trip. One small ram...still looking for the older age class.

It looks to be beautiful there. I sure hope that you can lock onto one of those Big Horns.
Thank you for the photographs.
I can't wait until you are on the hunt  more photos with a story.
Please remember Shoot straight, have Fun & be Safe!!

Blessings,
Dan
