I hadn't checked in on this thread in a while - wow - have to love the story of the moose taken by a "non-hunter" with an old pump-action .30-06 and 50 year old 220 grain factory ammo! OUTSTANDING!
Also - yeah - bears up close... Yee Haw! I've gone into the brush to finish off wounded black bear... Closest shot was about 10-15 FEET. That was interesting and absolutely got my attention. The .375 H&H Ruger Number One was in my hands then, with the scope dialed down to 1.5x. I was on the verge of removing the scope entirely, then I saw brown and shot.
If it was a grizzly/brown bear, I'd be happy with the .375, but would greatly prefer a repeater. I hear those things don't always go down with the first shot, even if it's a pretty good hit with a powerful rifle.
