Hi Guys,
Any of you big fans of the 22-250 rem? Is the 223 rem as effective as the 22-250 for ranges under 200 yards?

Mike
p.s.
As a side note, I am getting rid of some 22-250 reloading supplies. See the Classified Forum
:)

I have had a couple of 22-250's and Swifts. Great guns!
However with my 223 rem I can do 95% of what I was able to do with the others.

Good catridges with plenty of range. Now I just adjust the circumstances so my 223 is just as effective.

Inside 200 yds, the 223 Rem will do anything the 22-250 can do. Maybe even better if you have a faster barrel twist than 1:14 like some 22-250's have.

I have a 22-250 with a 20 inch barrel. most of my velocities are around hot 223 loads. I have never had a dog get way with a bullet it it yet at ay range. I like them both, but if I could do it again I would get a 22-250 with a 26 inch barrel. Know your gun and you'll e happy with either one.

Why would you get a gun with a 26 inch tube, out of curiosity?

Corey

I would assume the .22-250 with the 20 inch tube, would shoot similar velocities as the .223 with a 24 inch tube. With the 26 inch tube, I figure you could wring out the velocity the .22-250 is known for.

Cool, I just got a Remington 700 VSF with 26 inch tube. I guess I will get to find out.

C.Smith,

I'm sure you'll love it. Although I don not own a .22-250, I have many friends that do. What will you be using the new rifle on, mainly?

Coyotes is mostly all I plan on shooting with it. I thinking of just starting with the 50 grain BTs and work from there. I'm still undecided on the what powder to use, H380 or Varget.

Corey

I really like the 50gr BT, I use the 40gr BT in my .223 and really like it. They work great on coyotes. Good luck.

As a rule, the 22-250 is not a fur friendly caliber.
A lot is going to depend on wether any bones are hit.
I use the 50 gr BT in my 22-250. Evit wounds through the ribs is about the size of a nickle.

My hunting buddy and I have hunted yotes for years. He uses a .222Mag and I the 22-250. Yes, inside a couple hundred yards that round does everything my -250 does. I believe it's 27gr of 748 adn I know 55grn BK's.
Like JD said.. bone contact appears to be the biggest issue for holes. We've both seen next to nothing for exit holes as well as almost cut in half.
( Won't ever give up my 22-250 )

I use a 22-250 and 2 of my friends use 223 rem, theres not to much difference in damage at those distances on coyote but when we shoot rabits theres more damage from my 22-250. Either way there both good calibers and will do what you need, I love my 22-250 but the 223 does a good job also.

I would go with the longer tube for the extra fps. The 20" one is nice for riding around in the farm truck though, but with the loss of fps I might as well shoot a .223 AR and have all sorts of fun!!![/quote]

Inside those distances they would be both pretty well on par. The advantage of the .223 is slightly less noise! I own a .22/250 and absolutely love it, but if you are only shooting small distances I would go with the .223.

Well I went and bought a 250 varmint pack of 22/50 grain bts. I can't wait to get brass and dies so I can start reloading and chasing after Coyotes.

Corey

38 grains Varget and 40 gr BT.

I have yet to see a 22-250 not shoot this at 4100 fps and super accurately.
