Need some new powder updates/additions with the 220 Swift. H4350, RL16, & N540 are doing an awesome job with the 50 & 55 grain bullets.

About 39 years ago I had a Ruger 77 varmint rifle in 220 Swift and used IMR 4064 with 52 gr Speer HPs. Shot a lot of crows out in the peanut fields in east NC and as long as the wind was not blowing too much they did not get too far away. They looked like they swallowed a cherry bomb when hit.

Only 1 powder for the swift and that's IMR4064...

It's supposed to be a good one for the 220, but oddly enough I loaded for an older Ruger tang safety 220 swift with 55 v-max's and 4064 was the first powder I went for and could not get it to shoot satisfactorily with that powder.

The guy was in a hurry to shoot groundhogs so I tried IMR4831 and immediately found a load that was consistently 1/2" and under. Speeds were down significantly but it allowed him to go have fun. I'd like to revisit that rifle with 4064 or another powder to try and get both accuracy and speed.

Hodgdon lists 42.0 grains H4350 and 55 grain bullets at a paltry 50,000 CUP. I worked up a load in my rifle of 43.4 H4350 with 55 grain Varmageddon Tipped that delivers 3839 fps, 13 ES, 6 SD and shows zero signs of high pressure, easy bolt lift, no flattened primers, etc.
Once again I worked up this load in my rifle, your results will/may be different ... SAFETY FIRST!

I had a ruger MKII TARGET laminated/stainless and it loved 4064...1/2 MOA or better at 3900fps with 55g NBTs...Was hell on coyotes out to 500 yards...I shot that barrel out in 2 years and sold the rifle. Only swift I've ever owned and that was 15 years ago.

Why mess with success, unless you're just experimentally inclined?

I had a Ruger 77V about 30 years ago. H4895 & the thin-jacketed Hornady 50gr SX seated long was the best I came up with. Velocity was around 3850fps, groups flirted with 1/2". IMR 4064 shot well with flyers, & the speed wasn't as good as 4895. I was starting to work with RL15 with best accuracy, again, at around 3800fps with the 50gr Sierra MV Blitz, but sold the rifle after I got a 22-250 Ackley bastardization that could shoot 1/4" right around 3975fps with the 53gr Hornady match.

WLR primers were used for everything.

Other things tried in the Swift... IMR3031 kept up with H4895 velocity-wise with deteriorating accuracy over 3700fps. AA2700 showed abysmal accuracy but made it to right around 4020fps with a warm load. W-W 760 was promising with Hornady 53 Match. My gun didn't like any of the 55s too much except for RL15 & Nosler 55gr Solid Base which was showing promise but not chronographed.

More useless Swift trivia... At the time Hornady was just starting to make brass. It was unremarkable & hard to find. My lot of W-W bulk brass necks were too thick for my chamber. I hate turning necks. Norma brass worked real well. My buddy got an identical Ruger & it also liked the exact same load of H4895 & 50SXs best. The only thing that ever shot an honest-to-god over 4000fps with any accuracy out of the 24" Ruger was a batch of Norma 50s that shot around an inch at 4008fps. Even the old W-W 48 gr load was only 3959fps with maybe minute of pie plate accuracy.

A Model 54 Winchester (yes, a few of these snuck out of the factory pre-war) with 26" sporter weight barrel & a bright, shiny, crisply rifled bore stayed really close to the above results with a tad less accuracy & not much difference in velocity.

Not to mess with success, looking for new ways to meet that success. Checking out some loads with Alliant Reloader TS15.5 in my 220 Swift M70 Varmint 26" barrel. The powder exceeded my expectations. I wasn't shooting for groups just checking velocities, extreme spread and standard deviation data while shooting at a 100 yard target. Components are: 50 Varmageddon Tipped, RL15.5, Fed GM210M primers, Win brass 165.5 grain +/- 0.3 grains. 39.2 gr = 3927 fps, 14 ES, 7 SD; 39.6 gr = 3934 fps, 10 ES, 5 SD; 40 gr = 3997 fps, 23 ES, 11 SD; 40.4 gr = 4044 fps, 31 ES, 14 SD. None of the loads exhibited over pressure signs in my rifle or brass, no cratered primers, no stiff or stuck bolt and no loose primer pockets. Thanks to a recent cold front blowing through the temps were down in the upper 60s, so I'm imposing a 40 grain max charge on myself for this load and rifle. Not shooting for groups but the 39.2 gr was .734", 39.6 = .488", 40 gr = .492" and 40.4 = .452".

Looking for more success. Some data from my 220 Swift with 55 gr Varmageddon Tipped bullets and RL16.
41.7 gr = 3852 fps, 30 ES, 12.3 SD
41.9 gr = 3878 fps, 9 ES, 6.3 SD
42.1 gr = 3899 fps, 25 ES, 17.5 SD
42.3 gr = 3891 fps, 33 ES, 16.5 SD
It appears the sweet spot is somewhere between 41.7 - 42.1 grains due to decreasing velocity gains and increasing ES/SD after 42.1 grain. The groups remained at about 0.5" until the 42.3 grain load where it tightened up to .330". All the groups were centered on the same impact point in relation to aim point.

Have you tried the Alliant Power Pro 2000-MR powder?
I use Nosler 55gn Ballistic tip projectiles with 41gns of Alliant 2000-MR powder and Remington 91/2 primers . This resulted in a 5 shot group of 10mm @ 100m.
My rifle is a Ruger M77V with a SS 28" barrel with a 1:12 twist. There are no signs of stress from the fired cases.
With the factory M77V, my standard load was 42gns of W760 with Sierra BPBT projectiles which resulted in an average 5 shot velocity of 4029fps and produced a very tight group. I haven't as yet chronographed the Alliant powder.
The best powder for a particular rifle can only be determined by loading and test firing a different powder combinations with a particular projectile.
Alliant 2000-MR used with the Nosler 55gn SPBT produced a 5 shot group of 38mm @ 100m
I use a custom built shooting table and a Calder Fire Control Full-Length rest. I have owned this rifle for over 40years.

Welcome aboard, AussieSwift. That is some fine riflery you report with your swift. To be sure, the Swift is a sweet cartridge that needs to be seen more often. Look forward to your contributions to the discussions.

Welcome to the forum, 4000 + fps is smoking fast and a 10mm 5 shot group is amazing. You could reach out and touch those yotes easily with this flat shooting cartridge.

Fortis, thankyou for the data. Updates always come in handy. I just started working with Re-16 and 55gr bullets.

Someone recommended AA2700 to me a while back. I'd found a really good load using 4064, but I tried 2700 anyway. I found just about the same accuracy, but noted that the 2700 load did not heat the barrel nearly as fast as 4064 does. I'm seeing groups of about 1/2 inch, and velocities well over 3900. I'm a convert.

Correction to my insertion :
Alliant 2000-MR used with the Nosler 55gn SPBT produced a 5 shot group of 38mm @ 100m
I use a custom built shooting table and a Calder Fire Control Full-Length rest. I have owned this rifle for over 40years.

Should have stated :
Alliant 2000-MR used with the Sierra 55gn SPBT produced a 5 shot group of 38mm @ 100m
I use a custom built shooting table and a Caldwell Fire Control Full-Length rest. I have owned this rifle for over 40years.

This data may be of interest for 220Swift users.

I keep a record of case failures relating to Winchester and Norma brass which I load with the results as described below

Winchester Brass average shots/failure : 3.2
Norma brass average shots/failure : 12.5
In order to know the case firings, I use a jewellers triangular file to make a small notch on the base of every loaded case as per the photo below.

My rifle, being a Ruger M77V has an interesting characteristic which users of the original M77V will understand in that the barrel has considerable free bore to the extent that a 55gn projectile just seated, will not come in contact with the rifling lands. This I assume would result in (on detonation) an immediate lower chamber pressure compared to other makes where the projectile is seated almost in contact with the rifling lands. This is an obvious caution to other Swift users if they are attempting to replicate loads developed in an original M77V 26" barrel. My new SS 28" SS barrel is chambered to replicate the free bore of the original barrel.3.jpg
