With a 1-9 twist what have you found to be the heaviest and or longest bullet to stabilize in this twist? Traded up a 223 with this twist and the heaviest I have on hand and tried is the Sierra 69gr Match King which went straight thru the target no keyhole. Just curious what others have found out through their exsperience.

All 1-9"s are not created equal, you will have to experiment to figure out your barrel. I have had barrels (16" AR) that would put them point on at 100, but never tried them any further out. My CZ 527 Varmint refused to keep them on the same page.

69 grain Custom Competitions, SMKs, and TMKs have done fine. The Nosler accuracy load, 23.5 gr AA2230 has done well in many different rifles. That is a max load.

Too slow a twist doesn't automatically mean it won't shoot, it will reduce BC.

A 1:9 twist can be a bit of a gray area, since stability depends on more than bullet weight alone—bullet length, construction, velocity, and atmospheric conditions all play a role. The fact that your 69-grain MatchKings are showing clean holes is a useful observation, though.

I’d be cautious about assuming that a particular heavier or longer bullet will behave the same way in every rifle. If you want to experiment further, I’d stick with published load data and the bullet/barrel manufacturer’s recommendations rather than relying solely on weight as a guide.

My general experience is that I've found that most of the OTM 69-77 grain will stabilize in a 9 twist. 77s actually do better stabilizing than the Hornady 75s as they are shorter in length. The TMKs due to their length were a no-go both in 69 and 77.

Hpbt, after trying them in the 9’s I’ve never tried the eld in my 9’s.

I tried about 3/4 of a box hpbt with different powders in my 9’s. Never had a keyhole but never had a group under 2”. Same bullets shoot great from my 8’s.
That’s interesting. I have a Kimber Montana 223 with a 1-9 and it HAMMERS with the 75 HPBT and 77 TMK….

Ha. I doubt it Heath, but it just goes to show, sometimes things are different than what makers say they are.

Have you ever checked the twist on said rifle?

I’ve never ran a rod and patch down them. I have two rifles that are stamped 9 and neither will shoot the 75hpbt so I use 55-68gr in them and my 8 twist gets fed 75’s and down.

I’ve been using the Berger 73 gr. BT Target for a decade now in my Remington Mil-Spec 223 that has a 1:9” twist and compared to everything else that’s useable, nothing has beat it for accuracy and kills in my experience. Berger uses it for testing for accuracy over everything else that they sell in 223’s/5.56 if that matters to you. I’m able to get 2,850 from my 24” factory barrel using the 73 BT and VarGet in Lapua Match brass.
