225 Partitions with the Whelen

This past Saturday I got to the Range to test the 225 Partitions in the 35 Whelen. It measured 2,600 fps.

225 Partition
59.5 RL-15
Re-sized Rem cases
CCI-200 Primers
Seated same as the 225 AccuBond load

All I did was change bullets everything else was the same as the AccuBond load. At 100yds put 3-touching with the 4th next to the 3-clustered. Partitions seem to group better than the Accubonds but I lost 75-77 fps,as the AccuBond load travels 2677 fps. I think I'll take the charge up some, may even try CCI250 Mag Primers later.

I'll attempt to get a pic up ASAP.

I have had Partitions at times out shoot the Accubonds. Hope it all works out for you Don like you want and you get a good load you like.

Bullet,
Thanks Buddy. I like the AccuBond load I currently have but since I shot this good group will play with the powder charge some.

Your observation is not that unusual; Partitions can shoot very accurately. The differential in velocity is likely due to differences in bearing surface.

Dr. Mike,
I remember you commenting on that in an earlier post. I like what I see so far with the Partition.
I will attempt adjusting the charge somewhat now. It was 70-72 degrees Saturday morning at the range with no pressure signs appearing. I'll load RL-15, 60.0, 60.5 and 61.0 to see what results it gives next.

My 7RM prefers 175 grain Partitions. It seems to digest them with aplomb, and it is just as good at spitting out the 160 grain Partitions. AccuBonds don't give me near the same degree of accuracy in that rifle. I have absolutely no difficult in shooting the Partitions, however; it gets the job done.

Dr Mike,
At his point I'm thinking the frontal area of the Partition will expand quicker than the AccuBond and I would like that, not that I have any issues with the AccuBond. Just they differ in composition. I would be quite pleased with 2,600 fps actually. I know it will put Deer down quite nicely. But given a little more range time could prove a little more gain in velocity. I may just move up to the CCI250 Mag primer with the same powder charge first to see if it gains any velocity, then move on to different powder charges.

Another Whelen  That RL15 really does the trick in the Whelen.
I can't wait until my cousin gets off work and then we will be out to the range. My wife is picking up some cat litter as I read the instruction on the qualisorb and it states not breath in the dust. Well with it being near my face when I shoot hard not to breath in dust so I am going to litter to fill the bull bags that I just received today.

Blessings,
Dan

I'd recommend dropping back a bit when you change primer. I've witnessed some significant pressure increases with a primer change, especially from a large rifle primer to a magnum primer.

Dr. Mike,
Thanks for the advise I will do so when the primer change happens.

Thank-You,
Don

Don,

The 358 225 gr PT is a great bullet. I shot quite a few deer and a 250 ld Black Bear with it when it was first introduced back in 1990.
I shot a buck in the chest facing me and the bullet exited the south end, without really messing up the guts.
Its is accurate with lots of penetration.

JD,
Thanks, that's great performance. Looking forward to see what I can do with this load.

That is great Don! I think with a primer change or just bumping up the charge a little at a time with your current primer, you could easily touch 2700 and man, what a load that would be. I run that 225 PT in the 358 and it works just like Jim says it does, without messing up much meat either. Great shooting, post up your targets when you can.

Scotty,
I was waiting for you to jump in on this buddy. Yeah I think I'm on to something here. Just need a little more Range time to tweak it somewhat. With the mentioned changes I feel confident I'll get there.

I have no doubt. My experience with the Whelen has been it seems to shoot better as the pressure is pushed some. It has been the same way for the 225 AB, Sierra GK, Speer 250 HC and the 250 PT. All of them starting piling bullets as I was nearly compressed and running full steam.
