I am wondering if anybody has some good loads for a 240 grain bullet for a 300 win mag. And what were your results, and what did you think of them. Thank you

Sierra makes the 240 grain Matchking, and it's valued primarily as a looooong range target bullet, but also has an impressive record as a long-range hunting bullet.

I've used 220's, but never a 240 grain .30 cal bullet.

Regards, Guy

Good point. Something like a 1:8 twist as I recall?

Haven't checked, but it was faster than normal.

The 240 gr SMK is a long bullet. I'm thinking 1:8 twist sounds about right, check with Sierra on the recommended twist

..............A long range bench target rifle, assuming you have the right twist using a 240 grainer SMK,, is one thing...... But for hunting?

On any game affected that you could possibly hunt with a 300 Win. Mag, what can a 240 grainer possibly do, that a 200 grainer cannot do?.... Nothing imo!

Up until a year and a half ago and for 35 years previously, I did own and reload a 300 Win. I never did use on any game or paper punched a heavier bullet than a 200 grainer.

A 300 Win is at its best with the 180`s and the 200`s!

200GR AB is hard to beat for long range hunting.

It will make the 300 Win Mag a hammer.

The reason the I was going to try the 240 was because they have more momentum out at further distances and they also have more energy when they get there. But I can try the 200 AB. Thank you all for your advice.

I use the 200 AB in my 300 rums and 30-378. I have shot truckloads of animals with it. It rocks.

...................Yeah! But really not enough of an affect to warrant using them. If you aren`t successful using a 200 grainer on the same game at the same ranges, then you won`t be successful using a 240 grainer either.

I now have a 300 WSM 16.5" tubed compact, that fires a 200 gr. A/B @ a chrono`d velocity of 2828 fps (absolute max. load for my rifle). At that velocity, my 500 yard downrange energy is 1951 ft. lbs. Your 24" or 26" tubed 300 Win should get at least 2900-2930 fps with a 200 Nosler A/B. That would put your 500 yard energy at over a ton. Even at that range, there is certainly enough down range energy to be sufficient for shots into the vitals of any deer, big bull elk, any moose or black bear, etc...For dangerous bears? I`d get closer to within 200-250 yards.

More than adequate down range #`s when using the 200 grainer.

I hear what you are saying, but the difference in energy will be off set with a better bullet that offers controlled and predictable expansion and penetration.

The 200 gr AB is an awesome bullet for long range hunting.

Ok, I would have to agree with you Antelope_Sniper it does have energy. And that is what I am looking for. Well everyone I guess you have talked me into using the 200 grain accubonds for long range shooting. Does anyone have any good loads that might be able to put me at 3000 fps or faster? Then I will let you know how the results are after hunting season. Thanks

72.5 grains of rl22 and a 26" barrel will get you there.

There's only one problem there, I only have a 24 inch barrel.

No worries. Even at 2900+ fps, its still a hammer!

Start load is 68.5 grs RL 22 with the 200 gr AB in the 300 Win Mag.
Work up carefully.
