Hunted yesterday and had 2 does come into the field, 90yrds max. Pulled the trigger and first doe runs off, second takes a few steps and stops, i shoot again and second doe runs off... Im baffled because i know the rifle is sited in and shooting great... i waited a few minutes and decided to go look, found both deer with double lung shots but a pencil hole entry and exit.. largest doe runs 50yrds and smallest ran about 25yrds... Never had this problem with ballistic tips, maybe the accubonds are to tough for these little for an Alabama Doe...?

I often have deer run up to 80 yards after being hit with an AccuBond in any caliber. I wouldn't worry about that, it's normal. Ballistic tips or Bergers deliver more shock because they typically have more fragmentation. They also can potentially damage more meat and give less penetration on tougher shot angles. A short run after the shot doesn't worry me.

Im not use to deer running at all, i dont like hiking through thorn bushes to recover deer...lol

I've had that experience with 243. I want it to work. I've never lost a deer hit with a 30 cal. Most the 243 guys I know that claims 100% recovery do shoulder shots.

Any bullet that will expand so rapidly so as to drop a deer in it's tracks from a double lung shot will also not provide good penetration with angled shots or fail to penetrate on shoulder shots. Obviously there are exceptions out there.

Maybe try a neck shot? They will drop like a sack of hammers.

I used to hunt with a accurized heavy barreled 700 varmint in 6mm. I killed most of the deer with 105gr speer bullets in this rifle and a few with 100gr boat tails loaded to about 3150fps. This rifle was very accurate and would shoot 1/2" with these bullets. I try to double lung the deer I shoot and don't mind them running a short ways if they leave a good blood trail. Most of the deer shot under 75 yds went down and most shot over 75yds ran. I had one grown buck shot just at dark @ around 80yds run for 80yds but was easy to find with a good blood trail. This rifle had no recoil, was flat shooting and was easy to shoot accurately out of a stand. I've never lost a deer shot with the 6mm but most would run a ways leaving a good blood trail to follow. I would give the Accubonds more time than just two deer if they were shooting good in my rifle.

I do not take shoulder shots because I hunt for meat. Every shot that I take is double long hard or head shot. Before switching to AccuBond I used ballistic tip and never had a deer take more than a step or two and drop.

Sounds pretty normal to me to be honest. If you want more positive expansion get the BTs back out but honestly it sounds like they did all they could on pure chest shots. Haven't seen much other than varmint bullets or really light skinned bullets drop animals consistently with rib shots.

We had pretty good luck with the 90 ABs in the 243 this year but they were larger deer.

These Alabama doe are small this year.. i will be loading the 95gr BT for my last hunt...

Every deer i shot last year with BT's didnt walk far.. I switched to Accubonds because ther were on sale at SPS

I use ABs for caribou and moose to get deep penetration as well expansion. I've never recovered one-they always seem to exit.

My guess is they're a little too tough to get good expansion on smaller whitetails.

Then, your answer is clear! (y)

I like the rapid expansion and quick kills of the Ballistic Tip, particularly on deer sized game, but... have also been happy with it on bear and elk...

My favorite hunting bullet from the 6mm Remington! (y)

Excellent accuracy. Expands well. We usually see an exit on deer, not always. Quick kills every time, whitetail or mule deer. My son shoots this bullet exclusively in his 6mm Rem, which has very similar ballistics to a .243 Win.

If you go into the reloading section here on the forum, then go into bullet tests, then review 6mm bullets. I think the visual evidence can maybe give you reference to the comments above.
I'm not sure of the size of the WT Does in your area , but it's not much of a medium on broadside shots, at that range. The real story is in the wound channel, when you gut the animal I will usually look at the bullets path and damage.

There was not much internal damage at all.. a pencil size hole all the way through..

I really can't think of a bullet that will drop a deer on the spot every time . I've shot the heart apart , on more than a few , and they've run 60 or 80 yards , with little to no blood to help trail . sometimes things just don't know they are dead . when my son started hunting he used a 243 . I tried a few different bullets with mixed results . I finally switched to a 100 gr Partition and it worked well on Pa sized deer . he would usually shoot them right on the shoulder , so I adapted the ammo to him .

Same story here Jim. I like the 95 BT alot, but after seeing a bunch killed with it (by my hands and others) and then 3 this year I can't hardly tell the difference. Not saying there isn't any, but AB might not expand quite as wide as the BT's?

When you say a pencil hole all the way through do you mean it looks like a field tipped arrow zipped through it with no real wounding?

308 with 168 Ballistic Tips dropped this spike right on the spot at 180 yards, nice exit hole.

I think when we're talking about critters like smallish whitetails and to some extent slab sided stuff like mountain goats... all these newer controlled expansion bullets are somewhat counter productive.

When you really want to turn the lights out on a thin framed critter, softer bullets like Ballistic tips and even plain old cup and cores really shine. On a double lung from broad side- I'm not sure a small southern whitetail will stop just about any reasonable bullet out of a .243 at typical ranges.

I love ABs and have shot a pile of caribou with them, but if I went for deer I'd reach for some BTs or even a plain CoreLokt or Hot Cor for that matter.

I have shot a couple of small caribou with the AB, but I was way overgunned with a .300.
