o.k. dewey, you are up!

my grandfather ask me to ask you as well as others here on the forum, who might want to contribute to providing us with your idea of a perfect wolf load for this caliber.

thanks in advance as I am working and may not be able to respond for a while

Well, if you're saving pelts the 90 gr AB shouldn't tear them up too bad.
Here are the powder runs for you:

What a cool cartridge but then you know anything 6mm I am kind of partial too. I agree that the 90 gr. AccuBond would be a really good one as would the 100 gr. Partition. Both hold together nicely and won't tear him up too badly. I don't think it matters what bullet you use if you hit shoulder bone just right especially on the exit, the bone fragments can really put a nasty hole in things. At least that's what I have observed on coyotes. I would think it might hold true for wolves also.

Cheyenne,

I agree with the others that the 90 gr AB would be a great choice for wolf.
The 90 gr E-Tip would be another bullet to consider too.

I'd look at the slowest stick powders like R-50, R-33, N-570, or Retumbo. I shoot Retumbo in my 243AI and it's quite bit less capacity compared to a 244 H&H. I think I'd lean towards R-50 for a starting point.

I'd imagine that would be a good choice in that big case. I didn't know what powders he had on hand so I picked a few common ones. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if 869 would work.

869 is a ball powder though and very temp sensitive compared to the others. That's why I'd stick with the stick powders. If you never shoot past about 300yds the large velocity changes don't matter much but past that, on a wolf size animal, they could easily mean a miss. I doubt they have any of the super slow powders. The slowest powders are primarily wildcat cartridge country. There are very few factory calibers overbore enough to need R-50 with the exception of the 6.5-300 Bee and 26 Nosler. Most likely the slowest they would have would be H-1000 for the 275 H&H.

I shot Retumbo and R-33 in my 6WSM and it shot 105 Amax's just under 3600fps (3580fps if I remember right) in a 28" barrel. R-50 would of probably got it to 3600 but I didn't have any at the time I was playing with it. That's some pretty flat trajectory. The 6.5-300 Bee would be similar on a bigger scale.

I completely agree Jim as you cannot destroy those things even at close range. I completely forgot to mention the E-tips!

dewey, I have not been able to get in touch with her, she is probably on the job so to speak, but I know her grandfather likes Vihtavuori and probably has some but I don't know what or even if. Because of the area in which she lives and hunts, I would think VV might be a good one or what about the Hodgdon Extreme's Also they sell the pelts, so I was wondering if the Swift Sciro's would be worth a thought, but definitely the E-Tips suggested by Jim and David should work.

Are you going up to god's country to help her develop this load ? I would love to spend some time in that area----in the summer!!!!!!

I agree, summer would be best.
VV560 or 570 should do ok if he has those.
The etip would probably tear them up less but anything at 3300 or 3400 is going to cause some damage (other than maybe a FMJ)

I'd almost drive a 70gr NBT (a Hornady Vmax or Sierra Blitz King could be substituted as well) over 4000fps and try to keep it inside of the wolf if I was trying to save hides. Like Dewey said, just about anything you shoot at 3400+fps (except a FMJ) is going to tear some stuff up. VV570 would be the best bet with the heavier 90+gr bullets.

Cheyenne, I realize your main reason for getting the 244 was to expand your H & H collection and to that end congratulations. I am sure it will reach waaaay out there and down down a wolf, but I have some concern about the pelt, since I know you sell them.

I have no reloading advise for this caliber, but do have a question for other members

Canada---Dr Mike, Gil, and other Canada members I do not know, can you hunt with a FMJ bullet in Canada, and if so, when do you use it, if you do

Alaska---Hodgeman, Bear78, Brooke and other Alaska members I do not know, can you hunt with a FMJ bullet in Alaska and if so when do you use it, if you do

Best Regards

There are no restrictions, that I see listed anywhere in the regs., that would prevent someone in Alaska from using FMJ bullets. I also recall hearing about people doing so on another forum. I don't use them personally as I feel they don't/wouldn't provide enough knock down power on an animal. I've heard stories of coyotes being shot with them up here and going for miles. Precise shot placement, through the heart, would minimize that I'm sure; but even a good lung shot with one I think would still enable the animal to travel a fair distance before piling up.

No wolves where I live yet, but I shot a coyote at 30 yards with the wife's 270 with a Barnes 110g TTSX going 3400fps and the exit hole in shoulder was bigger than my fist. I would think the Nosler etip would do the same. I agree that a light varmint BT would probably stay inside and do less damage. Although at close range the solid base may still exit.

My uncle just told me that there is, or was, a fellow here in Alaska that hunts wolves all over the state using a 243wssm and FMJ bullets. Hopefully hodgeman or bear78 will be along to enlighten us further. Brooke

You can use FMJs up here if you want to....I'm not sure at the speeds you're talking it'll make much difference for pelt damage if you draw a close shot.

I know several guys who use the .243WIN for wolves to good effect Most use a standard 90-100gr. big game load. My chance at a wolf came at close range with a .300WSM- bullet choice wouldn't have made a difference..the hide needed a bunch of sewing to stitch it up. The pelt damage was fearful.

I personally would use the 90AB,BT or ETip and just roll with it. No need to load the .244H&H to the gills either as the .243/6mm class do just fine. I'd look for accuracy first and wouldn't sweat speed.

It's worth mentioning that wolves generally go 100lbs + in the Interior and that's about the size of whitetails in TN. No reason to not use a whitetail appropriate cartridge and bullet. I've got a .223 that I use for fox, coyote, and lynx...but wolves need more gun IMHO. They average 3x bigger than the biggest coyote and are much tougher as well. A truly big male can go 140-150lbs...in my book that's well out of the 55gr .223 class and into the realm of big game. I think the .244H&H is just fine for them.

As a post-script....

I've always seen wolves while hunting caribou and have never seen a wolf when there wasn't a herd of caribou milling about.

A .244H&H pushing a 90/100 AB, BT ot ETip would be pretty decent medicine for a caribou as well- especially in winter conditions where the ranges tend to be longer and the terrain is flat and white.

Regardless of what you use, stay off the big bones to minimize pelt damage.

Thank you! All your posts are much appreciated.

Still WAY up north and working, but speaking of Wolves. I have meant to tell you fellows about this video for over a year. As some of you know, although we hunt the wolf for the pelts, we have a different feeling about them than you fellows do in the States. Someone can post this video if they want or just go to ----Arctic Wolves Stroll up to workers in Canada, Telegraph News and watch it. This has happen to me on two different occasions when working in Nunavut, once a single wolf and once a pack of five. In neither case did I shoot any of them. The video I am referencing is a pack of seven, but only three are in the video. In the video and in my experience only one of the pack will get up close and personal
