25/06 and retumbo?

Hello all.
I saw a couple Retumbo recipes with the 25/06 and the 110 AccuBond on another site.
Anyone load this powder and if so I would be interested in your results.
I have a weakness for 25s and seem to be oversaturated on 25/06's currently (a good problem IMO) and keep monkeying with loads and powders for them.
I have used 4350 and 4831 but none of the RL's or Retumbo.
Looking at the recipes I saw it seemed that the Retumbo load might be the ticket for the AccuBond with the velocity and accuracy the poster claimed.
The load listed was 60 gr of Retumbo with Rem brass, WLR primer and the AccuBond.
Thanks in advance!
Dewey

I have not loaded for the 25-06 yet but slow powders are the ticket.
Retumbo and RL 25 are both excellent choices.

QL would suggest that there may be a problem with case fill if you are using Retumbo. I would try it, but I would be aware of the potential for problems with filling the case.

I've been using Retumbo in my .25-06 for four or five years now. It's worked out great with 115 grain bullets. Hodgdon lists it on their web site.

I'm getting 3120 fps with 57.5 grains of Retumbo, a 115 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip, Nosler brass, a Federal 210 match primer. Accuracy has been excellent.

100 yards, three shots off the bipod:
IMG_7168.jpg

420 yards, one shot, rested on my pack, on the hood of a Suburban:
IMG_6823.jpg

The 115 gr Ballistic Tip works great on mule deer & pronghorn too. I've got the photos up in our hunting photo section. Have never tried the 110 gr Accubonds.

Was able to work up to a higher charge of Retumbo with the 115 gr Nosler Partitions, with good accuracy too, at about 3200 fps.

I'd say, give it a try with the heavier bullets from the .25-06 cartridge. Don't know about the 110's. I usually used H4350 with the 100 gr bullets.

I have been giving my 25-06 a lot of attention this year and have found good velocity with RL-22, IMR-7828SSC, RL-19, IMR-4350(surprised this isnt on your QL menu Doc), and decent speed with H-4831. Best accuracy has been, in this order, RL-22, IMR-4350 and IMR-7828. I have used 110AB, 115BT, 115PT and 120PT bullets during these work-ups. I selected IMR-4350 under the 115 NBT@ 3150fps and RL-22 pushing the 110AB@ 3220fps as my hunt loads.

The 115BT load took a 2.5 yr old 7 pt WT this week at 120 yds. Shot was slightly quartering towards and center punched near shoulder and exited at the diaphragm rib causing extensive trauma. Tenderloins were a bit salty but the onions and shrooms balanced it all out nicely.

Like Guy, these loads were developed in another extremely accurate Remington 700. 8)

H4350 gives decent velocities; however, given the parameters for which I'm exploring, it yields less velocity that other powders. That is why it didn't show up. However, here is what it will do, according to QL projections.

Hey guys I just looked in my new Nosler #7 manual that showed up at the door! :p   It shows 57.5 grs. of Retumbo as the maximum with the 120 gr. bullet for 3175 fps in a 24" barrel.

49.0 of IMR4350 is 3080 fps.

R22 is not shown.

I used 61g for 100g nbts and 59g of Retumbo for 115g nbts. 1/2 MOA at 3450 and 3250fps. Rifle was a Rem 700 with a 24" shilen barrel. Awesome shooter and a little on the fast side, which was ok with me :)

I also like RL22 at 58g for the 100s and 54g for 115s, again 1/2 MOA at 3375 and 3150fps, these from a winchester 70 classic w/24" factory tube. I tried the 61g retumbo/100g nbt combo from above with this rifle and they still shot 1/2 MOA, but 200fps slower at 3250fps.

Lots of good powders for the 25-06. Its not a picky cartridge at all to load for and usually takes well to a wide variety of bullets/powders.

I tried RL22 and got this group with 100 gr BT's at 3310 fps

Next is RL 25 and Retumbo with 110 ab's and 115 BST...not that I need another load.

I haven't gotten Retumbo to shoot well in anything. I won't buy another pound of it, RL22/25 work just fine for me.

I'm running Re-25 with a 115 NBT(3150+ fps) and 120 NPT(3050 fps) at the moment.
I did play with Retumbo with the 115 NBT(3250+ fps) it shoots just as good and gives me higher velocities.
When I run out of Re-25 I'm switching to Retumbo.
I'm running a custom 26" barrel

Wow!
Terrific information. (I like this forum!)
Guess I have quite a few to choose from. Fun!
Thank you all!

Dr Mike,
Thanks for the Quickload!

I'm running RL25 with the 115BT in my wife's 25-06. I get an easy 3250 with them and accuracy is really good. I had to use CCI250's. BR2's didn't do very well, accuracy wise though. Looking forward to trying 110 ABs or 115 PTs. Also would like to try Joreys 100 grain BT load too.
