25-06 Question.

I wouldn't feel undergunned with a 22 inch barrel. You won't wring that many more fps from another two inches.

My wife's 25-06 is a Remington Mountain Rifle with a 22" barrel. It is accurate and a really nice rifle, but if I had a choice, it would have a 24" barrel on it to get the most out of the cartridge. Just my thoughts.

Alot of the 24" versions do fine & if I liked a rifle with a 24", it would not keep me from buying it. But if you want the best per. vel. wise I would go with a 26". I currently load for 3 Sendero's & one Ruger 77Tar, all with 26" & it is an edge. I have seen a couple of fast 24" tubes that were not far behind.
To me, I would not buy a 22" 25-06 for any price unless it was a 2nd
25-06.
I know of no other non-magnum round that needs a long tube as much.

I never tried one with a 22" barrel, but to me the .25-06 begs for at least a 24" barrel. It's got a lot of powder capacity for such a small bore, just like many mid-size magnums, and in fact it does real well with some of the same powders that do so well with the 7mm & .30 cal magnums: RL-22, H4831, Retumbo, and the like.
For me the beauty of the .25-06 is mild recoil & report coupled with a very lethal, FAST bullet. I don't know that you'd lose much speed by dropping to a 22" barrel, but... When my 24" barrel gives up I'll likely replace it with a 25" or 26" barrel... It's my open-country mule deer & coyote rifle and the extra inch or two won't be a problem at all. Just a thought.

Depending on your needs, a 22" barrel may be just fine.
Personally, I would go with a 24" barrel to get the velocity out of the cartridge.

You need at least a 24" barrel. A 26 is even better. If you go with a 22" you should just go with the 257 Roberts because you will get the same velocity. One thing about the 25-06 is after you shoot a few deer with it you want use anything else. :grin: Bang Flop.

I went with a 26" barrel when I built mine. That thin is a lazer beam, and where I hunt with it I'm not hindered by the long barrel. I'm very glad I didn't go shorter.
I bought a Marlin XL7C in 25-06 with a 22" barrel for a tree stand gun and for long walks in rough country.
It shoots my handloads with a good velocity that I don't believe the .257 Roberts can match.
If I want to lug a 24" barrel I have a 7MM Rem Mag for that.
You should match your gun configuration to the intended use.
The .243 is pretty much a similar over bore cartridge and all you see is 22".
If you are going to use the 25-06 as your long range rifle then a longer barrel would be better for you.
But I must say, it works in a 22", too.
