25-06 results

I too am a fan of the 25/06 after this year's antelope season and you certainly make a convincing case for the effectiveness and viability of the caliber.

I do however wish my rifle liked a wider selection of bullets. I'm going to try and work up a load using the 100 gr Nosler Partition next week. Before I took off for Wyoming the only thing I could get to shoot was an 87 gr Hornady SP behind IMR 4350.

IMO the 25 06 is one of the best for deer sized game. Performance has always been stellar. Bang flop. I've had lots of them take off when hit with the 300, 338, 270 Wby etc, but the 25 06 always flattened em with authority. I settled on the 120 grain, and it plain works. I load 120's for a buddy, and he uses it very effectively for elk and moose.

I started with 100's but a few years ago moved to 115's and have been very pleased with them. Not that the 100's failed to kill game.

I'm shooting a Winchester Model 70 with a 24" barrel and a 1:10 rate of twist.
It has shown a marked preference for flat based bullets and all my expirmentation with the Ballistic Tips and Hornady 117 grain SST's were for naught.

I got the Hornady 87 Grain bullets to shoot good prior to my trip to WY so that's what I used.

I have to fess up to using a .257 Roberts as well. I am getting about 3100 fps out of the 110 gr AccuBond and I am sure that it will more than adequately kill our little blacktails.

Last year I took a muley buck at 40 yards with my 257 bee. 110 AB at 3525 fps same story as the antelope above.

Vince Try the 117 Sierra Pro Hunter it is a flat based bullet. My custom Shilen barrel 1-10 twist 25-06 does not like boat tail bullets either but it will shoot that 117 Sierra FB like a house a fire. Try either of these loads. Work up to them. This is the Sierra accuracy load from a couple books back. 49 grs IMR 4350 and I got better accuracy with CCI 250 mag primers and 3000 fps 26" barrel. This one is a standard 25-06 load 52 grs H 4831 . This bullet is one great deer killing bullet. BANG FLOP.

I used the AccuBond in the 257 Wby but I havn't tried it in the 25-06. Based on Fotis's experience I believe I'll give it a try. I'd also like to try some of the 115/117 gr bullets. I'm hoping a 12o or 125 AccuBond is on the horizon.

I will probably give that a try in the future but I will say I'm a bit leery of trying a heavy bullet given some of the preferences and characteristics my rifle has shown. The 117 grain pill would be a longer bullet if I'm not mistaken and my rifle has shown a preference for shorter bullets so far. I believe that's why the 87 grain bullet shot so well.
I'm willing to give them a try though.
