25-06 vs .243?

I'll recommend buying the rifle you like best, then worrying about which cartridge. They're all death-dealing deer cartridges fully capable of taking game cleanly at 300+ yards.

Yep. If you like the Sporter model, you gotta go .25-06. If you like the Featherweight, you have a choice, I guess, but a 22" .25-06 seems like a 24" .264 WinMag... just not something I would want.

...the .25-06 is a very good medium game cartridge, that doubles as a pretty fair varmint round...

You cant really go wrong with either one. I shoot a 243 Win but I also have a 25 Gibbs and my Dad shoots a 25-06. I have killed coyotes with my 243 out to 460 yards and have seen my Dad kill deer and antelope between 500-600 yards 3 or 4 times. I know this post doesnt help a whole lot but the only solution, which other people have mentioned, is to get one of each!

I can't add too much to what has been said here. Have shot both extensively and believe that either choice will be a good one. I prefer the 25-06 just because it is more versatile...an 85grain BT at 3600fps will shoot flatter than a 22-250 with 55grain bullets. And on the top end you have a 120 grain bullet which is better for deer and antelope.

Either way you will be getting a good gun.

Way to be on choosing a Winchester....they're the best after all. Even though my 25-06 is a Remington I still love it.

How about the best of both? .250 AI !!! SA cartridge, light recoil of the .243 Win and heavier bullet selection. I've killed one of my biggest mule deer bucks wth the .243 and my smallest buck with the .25-06.

Ed Zachary!!

I love my 25.06 so much I almost regret getting my 257 wby especially since I have found such a good load using RL17.

The way I see it the 25.06 does anything the 243 does just it does it a little better.

3500 fps with a 100 gr bt is no slouch

I like the 243 for the broad selection of bullets compared to the 25-06. The bullets for paper punching alone blows the 25-06 out of the water.

So I take it your a 243 fan?

I have rifles in both calibers. The .25-06 is in a Classic Sporter, and throws 120's very well. One of the 3 .243's is in a Coyote Lite, and shoots any thing I feed it. The other 2 are Featherweights, and they like 70-95 grain BT or CT. If you get the chance to handle a Classic, in either Sporter or Featherweight, that will help you make your choice.

why not compromise and get a 260 rem your taking out the long action of the 25-06 and replacing it with a heavier higher bc bullet in a 243 case which will fill the gap for a deer round and a superb paper puncher at any distance. just a thought.

Actually that is a great thought!
I like the 260 and played with a few. 100 partitions at 3300 fps is not too bad at all.
However I do not think one can be had in 260 for now.

Well I happen to be a huge fan of the .243 win, and not so much of a fan anything .257" (I'm coming around though), but for what your describing I would have to go with the 25-06. Any time a guy is talking about taking big game with smaller calibers, I would vote for the bigger of the choices.

The 260 would be slick as well. It lacks the speed that the 25-06 does, but not by much.

I've shot both calibres & agree .243Win is fine, .25-06Rem does it better every time. However, I'd be happy to hunt with either. Cheers, G :)

Winchester needs to get with the program and offer a 260. It is the perfect cartridge for your desired uses. Just think about a 260 in a featherweight model 70 super grade. That would be an outstanding rifle/caliber combination.

Al, I would be inline for one! Scotty

Now how about if Winchester chambered the Extreme Weather SS & the Sporter in 6mm Remington. I might have to buy one of each!

Same here Kurt. I would probably forgo the 25-06 for awhile to get a 6mm Rem in a M70 Sporter. Scotty
