257,260,338

I saw a 325 featherweight that I hesitated on, unfortunately, but the 180 gr TSXs I used in my old 325 make a real nice long range shooter at over 3100 fps. With 150s it was about 3300 fps. and the recoil wasn't bad at all with those lighter bullets. Just another option. I'm looking forward to hearing what you choose.
Greg

I guess that I am just old like the .257 Bob? I can't understand why the .257 Robert's can't be loaded up to where I loaded it 30 years ago and be used for deer anymore? The 100 gr PT's sure killed deer fast back then at 3000 fps, I guess they don't anymore (just kidding)? I sure like the 7mm Mauser case, however, it has more powder space and is a better design than the .308 for reloading. Times change, I guess the marketing malignment of 57mm Mauser cases has had its effect after all? The 6mm Remington is stone DOA also.

Why not throw a little AI at that 260!
I own a 243 AI and had a 223 AI and 22-250 AI, not a big fan of fire forming cases anymore.
The cases do last a long time, My 243 AI brass is on its third barrel

The 260 for a standard caliber, neck up your 243 cases, low cost dies, varmint to deer combo rifle. Yep 260 is hard to beat. But if you want to go to the WILD side  . A 6.5X57 or even AI it. 257 Bob case necked up to 6.5 would be interesting. The .264 calibers have a lot going for them. Lots of good bullets these days that fly really well and they kill game with waaaaaaaaaay more authority than you can believe. I currently shoot 6.5X55 Swede and 264 Win mag. 120 Nosler ballistic tips at 3000 fps from the 6.5X55 and 130 Nosler Accubonds at 3350 fps from the 264 mag are awesome sights to behold when striking a deer. Picture a freight train hitting a VW bug at full steam.

I bit off topic, but what kind of speeds are you getting with the .243 AI?
My first two barrels I was pushing a 55gr NBT 4250fps, This barrel I backed them off to 4100.
I'm trying to see if my barrel will last longer
The 55gr NBT is a little laser and surprisingly stays in a coyote most of the time.
A 70 NBT at 3725
A 85 NPT at 3550 fps but never got a chance to try it on game.

I think I'm going with the 260 or thanks to Beretzs meddling   maybe the 6.5-284
Scotty
I hope you know I'm just kidding, I do value your input.

 SMOKING!

The more I think about it the more I'm leaning toward the 6.5-284............Scotty I beg your forgiveness.
I don't shoot near as much as I used to and probably won't burn out the barrel.
Local shop has Winchester 284 brass on sale cheaper than I can get 260 brass.
Bullets are the same price.
B/R dies cost the same.

Randy

Randy that's awesome man. I'm officially jealous of you guys with the custom 6.5's on M70 actions. I think the WSM and 6.5-284 are the coolest ones out there. Scotty

I'm like a bachelor walking through the penthouse mansion, I just can't make up my mind.
Well actually I did.
Going with a 26" Lilja #4 contour SS 1-8 twist in 6.5 Creedmoor.
I got my smith lined up.
He already put my rifle in his books and said by the time I get the barrel and get everything to him turn around should only be a few days.
Dan has the barrel in stock and I'll get it ordered next week.
Guns already been pillar bedded trying to get it to shoot as a 243 Win.
I should start load development in about a month.
I did some scope swapping on my rifles and will put on a Leupold 4.5x-14x-40 AO with B&C reticle on it.
Should be ready just in time for winter coyotes.
I'll get some pics posted when I get it.

Randy

Great choice; I'm sure you won't be sorry.

Remember that, per John Barsness, you can fireform Lapua 22-250 brass using the cream of wheat method instead of settling for that crappy Hornady brass.

All I've seen with the Creedmoor is positive. Should be a fun rifle for you.

VelvetAnt,

I think you will be very happy with the Creedmore. A very effeciant & pleasing cartridge to shoot, great ballistics ta boot and a good bullet range to select from nowdays.. You needed to fill that .264 hole in your line up..

Looking forwards to seeing the pics of the project..

Easy, choose the 6mm Remington with a 24" 1-9" twist barrel. It will shoot great for varmints with 55-75 gr. bullets and 100 gr. Partitions or 90 gr. E-Tips for medium game. Very fast and flat shooting with plenty of pop for deer, antelope, sheep, and other medium game! As stated in a previous reply, the longer magazine of the Winchester works very well for the 6mm and 257 Roberts platform.

6mm Remington

David,

Where have you been hiding? We were bereft without an advocate for the 24 calibre for the past several days.

Just been laying low Mike. Busy with work and life in general. Someone has to advocate for the 6mm Remington!

I kinda forgot about the 6mm Rem. I know when the time is right and my son no longer let's me shoot his 243 I will make a proper 6mm on a M70. I think it would make a sweet rifle.

Randy I'm glad your getting the 6.5. I think it will be sweet. Scotty
