260 Rem loads

Ok, so now that the rifle is almost here I'm gearing up for loading for it. Looks like H4350, 4831 and IMR 7828ssc are the front runners for pushing the heavier bullets from what I've read. Any other suggestions or pet loads anyone has for the 260? I've never loaded for this round so it's new territory for me and I'm not a big fan of reinventing the wheel! 24" barrel so not sure if the slightly faster powders are going to be better or if slow is the way to go. Initially I will be testing the Berger 130 & 140 VLD, 142 SMK, 140 custom comp, and 140 Amax. And I'm drooling over the announcement of the LR AccuBond for this gun! This will be primarily a target/competition gun but would love to be able to use the same load for hunting deer or antelope should the occasion arise, and will hopefully take it's fair share of the varmint population to that happy place in the sky.... :twisted:
 
I have used the 3 powders you mentioned with 140's and also IMR 4350 and all can work very well, in fact those will be the first powders tested when the new 260 finally shows up. Have heard Hunter is really good too but have yet to try it myself. Can't wait for the new 129 gr ALR to show up myself :) you should be able to find a great load pretty easily, the 260 is easy to please.
 
Given that powders such as 4831 & 7828 are very popular in the 260 with 140 grain bullets, why is there no load data listed for powders like RL22 or 25? They are in the same area for burn rate. Anybody with quick load want to run these with maybe the 140 Amax or 140 Berger hybrid?
 
I imagine you might run into capacity issues with the 7828/RL22's. Not saying they wouldn't be good in a case that would take them, but in some cases, you might run out of case before you get up to speed. I would think RL19/4350's would better for them. Same thing happens with the Swede. While 22 and 7828 show great numbers on QL, you run outta space too fast.
 
Scotty, I had the same thought. I ask because the smith that is building the rifle recommended 46.5gr of 7828ssc with 139 scenars as his go to load for other rifles he's done with the same reamer. So it's possible, and got me thinking about others in the same class of powders.
 
Gotcha, makes sense to me. If you have the ability to seat the bullets out further, you gain alot of case cap. If that is the case, I imagine you will be able to get it in there. I don't have QL on my work computer, but I would run the profiles later if you want.

I am using RL19 in the 7mm Mauser, which is similar to capacity as the 260, and it is a full case and I can seat the bullets out pretty far to not intrude in the case cap. I would also look at RL17. Might work really well in your scenario.

Sounds like it should scoot them along pretty well though. I really dig the 260 and AI version. Pretty sweet combo. I am liking the lower recoiling rifles more and more.

The reamer used has .098 of freebore which lets you seat the 140 class bullets to max AICS mag length and have the rounds at the lands.

Here is a picture of a proof target the smith shot with the rifle he built previous to mine....seems like a decent load worth a look! :shock:

It would just be wrong not to try that load.
 
Wow thankfully I still have a bit or IMR 7828 SSC to try, those are some outstading results. Just go word that my Savage has been shipped from the plant should be here in around 2 weeks after it clears customs and then makes its way from Omineca Sports to my door :) It will be neat to see how yours turns out.

For those in Canada wanting the Lapua Scenar Hirsch Precision has them, going to try the 123 and 139 gr Scenars this spring.

Also, if you want some 140 CC's to try, I have an almost full bag I would send you. Tried them in the 264WM, but I am sticking with 140 BT and AB's. No need for another bullet..
 
Wow, that's a pretty big difference predicted between those and the Berger's. I might take you up on that Scott, but I'm going to test the Berger's and the amax first. With the velocity and bc advantage of the Berger's I'm hoping they will shoot really well and I'll be done and have a load equally at home at a match or out hunting. That is until the new AccuBond hits the shelves!

Thanks for the help Scott & Mike! Hopefully I'll get an email this week with a tracking number for my rifle and I can stop dreaming about shooting it and start burning some powder!
 
Could someone with quick load please run the 140 amax with H4831sc and H4350 for me with 24" barrel? Weather is possibly going to break a bit Sunday afternoon so I might be able to get out and get the new rifle broken in!
