I loaded up some 120gr Corelokt's and some H4831sc as "break in" loads. Not a formal break in, just some rounds to get the barrel started off.

Boresighted it, 6 shots to get it fairly close to POA, and shot three for "record". Here it is:

I am pretty pleased to see that. Not sure that load will repeat, and it's not what I would want for hunting, but I take it as a good omen, at least.

The rifle is quite pleasant to shoot on the bench. I had a moderate charge, nothing too fearsome, and the Supergrades are not light, by any means. That group was made up of shots 7-9 through the rifle. That makes me smile. :D

It promises to be a most endearing addition to your Model 70s, Tom; and with CoreLokts, yet! Congratulations.

Tom you definitely have it on the right course.
You will have it exactly where you want it in no time at all!

Blessings,
Dan

The better part is now I have fired brass, so now I got the H20 capacities, ran it all through QL, and found how light those charges really were. VERY light....velocities are estimated at 2991 for a 120. Pretty pedestrian for the 264WM, but should be a gentle start for the barrel.

Now I have better data, and I'm going to try to chrono the next batch, to verify that the QL estimates are on track. Just seeing that group out of the gate, though, gives me some hope. :)

Pretty Pedestrian???

Break her in hard.... run her hard!!!!

Seriously looking good Tom. But what did you expect? Its a 70!!

Looking good. If it shoots that well with accuracy at that lower velocity, it should be a hummer at higher velocities when you have her broken in. I wonder if she has ever been fired and broken in?

I do remember using a max load of H 4831 sc with 129 gr Hornady Spire points for a bit over 3100 fps and fantastic accuracy. It may only be 270 Win speeds but they sure shot well with good old H 4831 sc :) It is an accurate powder.

We still have some IMR 7828 SSC on dealler shelves around here. We do not have any RL slow powders but at least we have the slow IMR powders available!

QL says I can run that bullet in my rifle up over 3200, but I am going to switch to 140AB's after 20 rounds or so, and RL25.

Should be able to top 3100 with the 140's and hopefully give good accuracy.

I think that three shot group is an excellent start. You could hunt deer sized game with that load, just fine.

Now, on to heavier charges of slow burning powder, and heavier bullets... You'll find that magnum load you want!

Guy

That looks like one fine way to start out with a new rifle considering you just put a few break in rounds together.

That rifle would make me smile Tom. Turning in groups like that, with a fresh barrel, your going to be in great shape.

Got back to the range today....

The Corelokts didn't quite repeat, which was pretty much expected.

I started into the 140AB's with RL25, and got up to 3020fps, groups were around 2". There's room to go up, though, and the groups were down at 1.4" at slow speeds, opened to 3", and started coming back down, to 2.1" where I finished out.

Next trip I'm going to push up higher and see where I wind up.

Round count is up to about 30.

Glad to hear that you are making progress. That surely is a killer rifle for looks. You should be able to find a combo load which gets you close to MOA. Good luck Tom!
