.270 Weatherby

While Lilja makes some good barrels (I have a .416 rem with his barrel that shoots 3/8 to 1/2") I've had a few bad ones too. I would buy a Krieger, Bartlein, or Broughton if I was looking for a top rung barrel and had any to choose from. After that I'd pick Schneider or Brux. Probably the best shooting barrels I've had have been from Hart but so have some of the worst shooters. For me consistently great is better than an occasional screamer with some crap thrown in. If you look at the equipment lists for the top 1000yd benchrest shooters or F-class shooters they will pretty much mirror my sentiments. Just my opinion from using 100+ custom barrels from most every manufacture. Krieger also has a pretty big list of in stock barrels.

The standard, non-belted long action is the one you will want to use for a 7X57. That is for sure a great cartridge!

Yes sir, it is a good shooting cartridge. Very mild in recoil and very nice on the powder consumption as well! Great choice!

Thanks for the heads up on the barrell makers. I don't own a custom barrell and it is nice to hear other people's perspectives.

I appreciate it.

I'm kind of hung up on Krieger. But I haven't used much else. Had a Hart that shot really well too.

Palouser,
Ruger chambered the 1B for a number of years in 270 Weatherby. I've seen them on G.B. for as low as $700 sometimes.

This one went for a premium! Here is a picture of my 270 Weatherby:

Good luck on making/finding your own. The 270 Bee is a cool one!

I'm not a Ruger fan but that is a pretty cool looking #1 Scott. The color case hardening looking is cool and not seen much anymore.

Beautiful Gun! That looks flat awesome. I might have to look into that!

Thanks!

So I am new to this or any forum, but it look like you guys pretty much know all of each other?

Palouser,

You won't remain a newbie for long. You will find a warm welcome as you share the insight you have gained and as you ask for information to help make your hand loading a more productive endeavour. Shortly, you'll be at ease calling people by name and feeling as though you have known them for decades.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Just felt like the guy who came late to the party there for a little.

Uh oh - now I am in a conundrum! I was going to build this .270 Weatherby which I have wanted for awhile but I had a friend offer me a pre-64 .270 with less that 20 rounds through it at a good price. It is a beautiful, completely original rifle with no issues. I also have on my list to buy a TGR in .280 AI. What to do...my gut is telling me all three!!! But with two in diapers and a stay at home wife, don't know if I can swing it.

Any suggestions?

I have gone down the path of a "impulse" purchase like you have with the 270 your friend has. Will the .270 do the job you want the Weatherby for? If not pass and save for what you really want. You will hang onto the rifles/calibers you really want vs. one that stumbles across your path. There will always be another rifle to buy no matter how many you put in the gun safe if you are like most of the nuts on this site  .

I think you need to buy the .270 and give it to me for the same price you get it for !! :)

I'm pretty philosophical about rifle buys. I have only sold off one rifle in my lifetime, and that was because it was an inaccurate piece of crap with no hope of improvement short of a complete rebuild. I actually toyed with the rebuild idea, but then I came across a deal on a rifle for my son, and traded quickly. Of course, now I have this unending urge to buy another in the same chambering (7mmRemMag), but that's another story. What I've found is that I keep a running list of guns I've "always wanted" and if an opportunity comes along to pick up one of these, and it's a good deal, I generally grab it, funds permitting. If I run across something interesting that's not on the list, I consider it and generally make the decision based on whether or not I believe I'd get it, keep it, and use it regularly. I've passed on some pretty nice deals on some pretty nice rifles because I either didn't think I'd use them, or I didn't think I'd keep them long-term.

If you've "always wanted" a pre-64 Winchester Model 70, and this 270Win is a good deal, it will very likely scratch about 80% of the 270Wby itch. Now, I own a 270Wby, and my brother owns a 270Win, and I absolutely won't ever be without my 270Wby, I can tell you. But, my brother loves his 270Win almost as much as I love my 'bee. Whatever the Win will do, the 'bee will do better, but the Win is no slouch. On the other hand, if you really want a 270Wby, the Win just isn't going to scratch the itch, no matter how nice a rifle it is.

Think of the 270 Pre 64 as in investment for your Weatherby.. They aren't losing value and heck, you might just come to like it? That's a tough one.

I have always wanted an original one, chambered for .270 Win. I recently gave up looking because most of the ones I found were chopped, drilled or refinished, and the original ones were way too much money. I just happened on this one. Guess I am going to have to give up the .270 Wby idea for a little or until Nosler decides to build one in .270 Wby.

I'll post some pics of the old girl when I get it. It is beautiful.

Thanks guys!

Todd

Todd, I would do the same thing! Nothing like a Pre 64 270. That should be about as good a rifle as about any man could hope to have.. At least us common folk!
