O.K. Gerry got me interested in the 160 Partition for my .270 win. My buddies and I are planning a black bear hunt in north eastern Washington for 2016. We'd be going this year but one of the guys just retired from the Sheriff's Office and took another job. He doesn't have the vacation time built up. So to the point, could one of you gentlemen, pull up a quick load for the 160 Partition from a 22" barrel and an OAL of 3.340. And its good to see a few posts about the .270 win. I'm getting a little tired of the .280 this and .280 that.

270??? Whazzat???  Just kidding. I set the pressure at 64k for the grouping below. If you want any particular ones broken out, just shout.

Cartridge : .270 Win. (SAAMI)
Bullet : .277, 160, Nosler PART SSP 16324
Useable Case Capaci: 59.367 grain H2O = 3.855 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.340 inch = 84.84 mm
Barrel Length : 22.0 inch = 558.8 mm

Man, makes me wanna try some of them from the 270 WSM someday. The 270 Win at 2850 would be a strong load! I'd hunt the tar outta that. Decent BC too for being a semi-spitzer.

This is something I have never tried to use yet either. It only adds to the versatility of an already way versatile load in my opinion. O'Connor wrote in a couple of his books about how Dominion Cartridge Co. in Canada loaded a 160 grain bullet getting roughly 2800 fps in factory form back in the day. He claimed it was a great bullet and for greater north hunting, a nice all-around choice.

It was called the Kling Kor Soft Point (KKSP) I wish I could still find them. Actually I wish there were more Canadian bullet makers.

Bruce good luck on finding a good load with the 160 gr Partition, my work up was easy with the bullet. While lighter bullets would obviously work well on a bear the 160 gr PT is one excellent bullet and is super cool too.

Looking at that Quickload data there look to be some really great loads. Of that list I may give IMR 7828 ssc a try after the Magnum is gone.

Gerry, I bought a can of 7828 ssc today. I actually bought it to try with the 150 Partition. But I'll try it on the 160 also. I ran the 160 out with my pejsa program and it retains more energy than the 150 with only a few inches more drop at 400 yds. Looks good for a long range thumper. Now I have to start watching the pro shop for some blems.

I think I,ll try 7828 also. I have some 160,s loaded with RL-22 waiting for range day. Already did some testing with IMR-4831. Got 2825 with that powder. Had to push them pretty hard though. It does look like 7828 and RL-22 are the better bets. Should be able to knock down 2800 pretty easy. With an SD of .298 the 160 PT rivals a 200 gr. PT in 30 cal. The 160 is certainly an attractive option for the .270.

Bruce and hubcap I look forward to seeing your results, hope you keep us up to date.

Along with IMR 7828 ssc I have some RL 22 to try as well. The .298 s.d. of the 160 gr Partition caught my eye as well and it compares favorably to the 200 gr PT as you mentioned. Loaded to 3000 fps in a 270 WSM or 3100 fps in a 270 Wby would be an awesome load too.

I found some and I'm certainly going to give them a whirl! I have spoken with several ballisticians through the years and they all say the same thing; if you want speed and killing power in a short barrel use heavy bullets with slower powders! I like how heavier bullets just thump critters, even though I use fast/light just as often. There is something reassuring about heavy bullets in the deep woods, no matter the game.

I've got some. Just haven't tried them yet. They should be wicked from my 270 WSM

Was wondering about this thread yesterday and if anyone has done some work with it in the last while. I hope to try some more loads soon. Scotty, I bet you would get an easy 3000 fps in your WSM.............

Jerry, I will hit the range late next week with the 160 PT using RL-22 and IMR-7828 and IMR-4831. I will post results.

I'm gonna try and hit the range Friday but I'll be trying out the 150s. I can't find any 160s. The 160 gr at around 3000+ would be awesome. Even at around 2850 or so from the .270 win the bullet should be a crusher.

Great guys, I'll post up results as well when I test them some more.

Hey Uncle Bruce- I got mine off of Widener's Reloading web site, they have both the 150 and 160 partitions. P.S. I used to move oilfield equipment all in your area up until 1980, then went to work for Baroid until I went to Oklahoma for Bible College in '87! I was reared in Liberty Co. I sure miss the seafood! However, I am going to South Padre Island In August on vacation, yeah!

I bet it would, although the few bears I've seen here in Utah were pretty small. The biggest black bear I've ever seen, in a zoo or in the wild was a wild one in Estes park, Co. It had been eating trash in town, and I saw it behind the Stanley Hotel. I'm not a good judge but that sucker was huge! Big head, small ears and rolly polly fat, ha.
