.270 win 160 partition

A 130 grain Partition in the .270 at 3000 fps will go right through the average black bear, lengthwise?

As I recall JOC killed six grizzlies with the 130 PT. The 160 PT would probably go thru an elk end to end. :) :) :)

This is all good stuff to know. I've only seen two bears in the wild while hunting, both in New Mexico, and neither were close enough to have an notion of how heavy they were. In addition, I know doodley squat about bear hunting. I don't know if having too much bullet would be on the bad side or not.

I do believe that a 150 gr, .270 Win Partition would kill any black bear that ever lived quickly. The bears that I see while fishing in the Cascades are mostly in the 250-350 lb range. Occasionally a 450 lb bear is killed here but that is unusual. Plus with the 150 grain PT, you can easily push them to 2900 fps and have a very accurate and potent black bear round?

Charlie is spot on there. I'd hunt anything on this continent with a 150 PT in a 270 Winchester running at 2900. Even large bear are taken every danged Fall with the same or similar combo's. All this danged 160 talk has me wanting to fire up my 270 WSM with the 160 PTs. Scared I'll like it and wanna take it hunting again though!

You guys are talking me out of buying those 160 partitions. Our host ain't gonna like that.

It is just a ploy to hoard more for ourselves Bruce!

I just got 200 of the 130s from the pro shop. I wish they'd hurry up with some 150 and 160s.

I got the 130s on tuesday. They haven't had any 150s or 160s since forever it seems. I'm assuming some will show up soon. But I've got until Sept 2016 to work up the Bear loads. I'm well satisfied with the 130 for most everything I hunt 'round home. That is unless I get froggy and head off to Colorado for OTC elk in October. We didn't draw our usual muley hunt in NM so I'm a little put off. Don't know if I can wait till 2016 for an adventure.

Just tried the 160 gr Partition with IMR 7828 ssc, 56 gr gave me 2823 fps but is a bit warm in my gun. Fired two more of my original 60 gr Magnum over the chronograph to compare and they clocked 2763 fps today and were in the same hole. I had to ask why am I trying a different powder with accuracy like that? It looks like I have found some more Magnum and Big Game for sale, will find out how much he has in stock on Monday. Still planning to try IMR 7977 though when some comes up for sale locally.

RL25 or maybe H1000 might be decent as well.

Although, with that sorta accruracy your not leaving anything on the table.

I scored a pound of Norma MRP at Cabelas today. I'll be giving it a try whenever I find some bullets. They also had a bunch of Vhitavouri powder on the shelf, haven't seen any of that on the shelf in a long long time.

Scotty, I fear H-1000 is too bulky and won't be able to get enough in the case to do much good.

I got some awesome speeds in my .280 with Magpro but no real accuracy in that particular rifle. It might be a good one to try. I haven't seen any Magnum anywhere, ever.

Your probably right Bruce. I've never tried it, just guessing a little. I'm sure I'd try RL26 or 25 though. MRP might be a great one though.

I've no doubt that H-1000 is capable of giving some really good groups. I use it for my 160 AccuBond loads in the 7mm rem mag. I wish they had a short cut version. I've got three of the top velocity/pressure combinations to try with Re-22, IMR 7828ssc, and Norma MRP. All three appear to work very well with the 150 and 160 partitions.

Those are three great powders Bruce. Even though the Magnum load is good I have some RL 22 and 25 to try as well. Would really love to put one of them into a moose this fall..........

I have been using IMR 4350 with 130 gr Partitions in the .270 since 1966 when I bought my first .270 Win. I still use the same load, 55.0 gr of 4350 but my MV has dropped indicating that IMR powders have been lawyered up? So I started using a Fed 215 primer to light the fire a little more aggressively?

Bruce,

The 130 GR PT is more than enough bullet for a black bear.
