270 win + Heavy bullets HELP

Gentlemen,

I have a nice 270 win that I am using to hunt pigs. I am thinking in using it also for red stags (smaller than elks) next march.

I have great confidence on Remington CL Round Nose 150 grains, but I have two boxes of the old Round Nose Speer bullets in 170 grains.

I was thinking that as Nosler has a Partition for this caliber in 160 grains, maybe someone can help me with reloading data for these long 170 grainers. I only have RL-22 powder.

Do you think they will perform better than a 150 grainer fired at higher velocity ??

With RL 22 you should max out at about 53 grains or so. Start at 50 and work up slow. I expect velocity to be no more that 2700 fps.

I used data from Nosler # 6 with great results. NP 160 gr and Vithavuori N165.

Start load 48 gr, max load 52 gr.

In all honesty, the 150 gr PT is a very robust bullet and all you would ever need for the biggest of hogs.

I have used IMR-4831 and H-4831 with the 170 speer round nose. Load data is from speer book number 6 and number 9. Of course RL-22 was not listed back then. Any way number 9 from 1974 shows 57 max for H-4831 at 2785 and 52 max for IMR4831 2611 vel. The book also shows IMR-4350 51 grains max at 2652. Speer used remmy brass and cci-200 primers for there data. Linda Olin from speer recently told me these bullets are for LARGE animals in heavy cover. I,ve never used them except on targets and found them plenty accurate. I also found it was no problem running them a bit past 2700 velocity. 8) 8)

The 150 grain Partition will work just fine for red stag. In fact, I could not imagine a better bullet for your 270 Win. Any bush/limb that would deflect that bullet will deflect a round nose as well. You will need to "thread the eye of the needle" to send a bullet true and straight through bush when hunting any game.

DrMike is spot on, there is no such thing as a true brush bucker. All bullets will deflect so its best to find a "hole" in the brush to shoot through.
Tje 150 gr PT would be the perfect bullet in your 270 Win for Red Stag.

150gr Partitions and a max load of H4831 kill elk just fime for me. I expect they would do very well for you.

My load for 150 Partition is H4831 58 grain, Winchester Large Rifle Primer and 3.45 coal.
They fly 2800 from my 22.5 barrel and very accurate. Less the 1 inch from my Sako 85.

2800 for a 150 out of a 270WIN is a great load! That would be my pick for elk if I ever had to hunt them with a 270Win. Scotty

If you need more speed RL-22 58 gr with Winchester Large Rifle primer produces about 2850 fps from 22.5 barrel.
150 Partition or Hornady Interbond. Max for me is 58.5 gr charge no pressure signs will add another 20 fps.
2850 fps with 150 grain bullet it is very nice energy set up for 270 win.

With Sako 85 22.5 inch tube I shoot about 1.5 inch at 200 yards. I would like to get to 1 inch at this distance.
This was with 150 Partition bullet.
At 100 yards 3 shoots I could get in less than and inch.
When I shot 200 yards the day was cold about 17 F, when I shot 100 yards another day was 28F.
2850 FPS I clocked with 40 F temp. At temp of 70 F it clocked at 2900 FPS with WLR primers average out of 5 shots!!!!!
The use of primers might play a role from warm to cold temperature. Warm weather large rifle, cold large rifle magnum. This could lower the speed variation.
I just try my new load with 140 AB and H1000. it is another great load. I would like to see it about 2930-2950FPS and accurate in one inch or less at 100.

Hi Guys,

I have been using the 170 Gr Speer bullet for almost 40 years, I burn 56 Gr H4831, in my Rifle, with a WLRM Primer, (so that it works well in cold weather also,) this load is allways the first in the chamber, and puts down 9 out of 10 of my animals, it only clocks around 2650 fps, but will out perform any lighter bullet out to at least 200 yds ,
this load has put down around 25 moose, a large bull elk, also lots of deer.
I sight the rifle in for a 140 BT,( the 140 works well past 250 yds), then make sure that I know where the 170 gr shoots, (usually very close to the crosshair at 100 Yds) I am sure that you can figure out the rest.

Welcome to the forum, and thanks for posting. A 170 grain would be a hammer at reasonable distances. Where are you finding 170 grain Speers?

I have been shooting the 270 win for over 40 years. Never did try heavy stuff and have used it on Moose and Elk and every other big game species here in Saskatchewan. With bonded bullets from Nosler I would not be afraid of any of the weights.
I have personally used nothing but 130gr PTs for the first 30 years and now have been using ABs even in the heavy timber of this province. :mrgreen:
