I tell ya, all this .270 bashin' goin' on. I was in New Mexico this past season doing some varmint shooting and such since we didn't get any deer tags. I was walking down this trail and for what ever reason looked down just in time to see a rifle cartridge lying on the ground. I picked it up and it was a .270 winchester silver tip. Not the new one but the old tin cap silver tip. Given the level of corrosion it had been there more than a few years. I took this as an omen. I'm draggin' out my Remington 700 classic in .270 winchester that I haven't hunted with in 20 years and the last loads I had were for a 130 Sierra. I bought some 130 partitions and some 140 accubonds to begin the resurrection. It will be going to New Mexico next fall providing we get some tags.

I've got two loads ready for the range. 130 Partition with 60grs of H-4831sc and 62grs of Re-22. Both are winchester cases federal primers and loaded 0.010 off the lands.

I rag on those shooting the .270 Winchester. However, it is good natured ribbing. Nothing wrong with the .270; it'll carry the mail on about everything most of us will ever hunt. I just happened to have got a .280 Remington before a .270 Winchester showed up. Good luck on the tags. If you're toting that .270 loaded with either 130 Partitions or 140 AccuBonds, you'll be well equipped.

That ought to work. I still like the 130 Sierras with 60 grs H4831 or the SC version. They shot very accurate and killed deer in their tracks for me when I used a 270 Win and still do for my hunting buddy that now has my old 270 Rem SS rifle.

The .270 was, is, and will continue to be one of the all-time great American hunting cartridges.

( I mean, if you can't find a .30-06... )

Just couldn't stay serious, sorry. The .270 really is a great cartridge with a terrific legacy in the field.

1shot, The last time I hunted with the rifle the load was a 130 sierra with IMR-4350. I don't currently have either on hand. No doubt that 130 sierra is hard to beat, it was responsible for a lot bang flops for me too.

Guy, I can actually find a couple, I have two .30-06s in the closet, a model 70 and a rem 742. The 742 will be brought out if our plan to hunt black bear over bait comes about the next couple years. The 742 will group around 1.5" at 100yds which is plenty good 'nuff. I currently got an eye peeled at the SPS for 165 pts.

Bruce,
It was meant to be. You'll need to carry that old Silvertip with you when you hunt the .270. That is serious mojo calling your name. 8)

Hard to beat a good old 700 Classic, I bet it is a tack driver. Long live the 270 Win :)

A good buddy of mine, who has hunted North America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand keeps going back to his .270 Win, in a Remington Mountain Rifle. Really nice little rascal. Not the most accurate rifle he's got, but good enough. He's got at least one 200+ inch mule deer with it now, and a whole lot of mulies and pronghorns to go along. Mostly he uses 140's, I'm not sure which bullet these days.

Normally I think of the .270 as a real light recoiling cartridge, but out of his lightweight rifle with that pencil thin barrel... It's got a little snap to it!

Love my 270! Even though I'm head over heels with the rum right now I just finished up a new load with the 140 ab and magpro. As well as fine tuning the 150 ablr. Both of these loads are shooting about .5 moa and as constantly add I can shoot them. In fact the other day I shoot the 140 @300 yards and the group was a perfect inch. So I sat there and rang a 3" gong at 300 yards for about an hour. 270 is got to be in the top. Fun to shoot off the bench and can be deadly accurate.

I kinda like the .270 as well.. Oh wait I have 3 of them in the collection right now :). I have yet to find any .270 that wasn't accurate as heck and a pleasure to shoot.

Since we now have a 3rd child on the ground, I need one more .270 so each little one can have one and so can the old man!!

The 270win is top shelf for this hunter . I would not be afraid to take my 270win loaded with a 130gr. Partition or AccuBond on any North American big game hunt! It has been used to fill my deep freeze for over 40 years.
I have now had Rocky Mountain Rifle build me a 280AI & I am very excited to start a new chapter in my hunting career . I know that the 280AI has superior balistics to the 270win. But it will always have a place in my safe !

Blessings,
Dan

I'm a die hard 280 man, but I wouldn't hesitate to hit the field with a 270 in my hands! I know several people who hunt with that caliber.

130g NPT and 61g of H4831sc gets me 3060fps and sub 1 inch at 100y. I have a bit of a loose chamber so I need a little more powder than some.

Also love 160g Partitions and 150g SSTs with 57-58g of H4831sc. Good for 2800-2900fps respectively.

This cartridge is an all time great.

Dust that sucker off Bruce!

Never owned a 270 Win but if I did, I would use the classic load, 130 gr PT with H4831 and kill stuff.

My first centerfire rifle was a Rem Model 78 in .270Win which I bought when I was promoted to E-4 back in 1984. It has harvested a pile of deer, a few black bear, a dozen or so coyotes and a bull moose. Easily shoots MOA or better with a variety of commercial ammo and handloads. My son took his first few deer with the same.

I load for three other .270's owned by good friends, a Rem Mtn LSS, Rem 700 BDL and a Ruger Model 77 Mk II. All shoot sub-MOA and have easily taken over 50 WTs combined.

The .270Win holds a special place in my shooting situation.

Wish I had a dollar for every 130gr. round I shot with H4831. I could probably buy two new remmy 700,s with the cash.

I'm trying to talk my wife into letting me buy her a Featherweight in 270...she has a good Rem 700, but I'd like to get us all into model 70's...

EDIT: She just said YES!

I used the Rem 700 trigger/safety debacle to my/her advantage, LOL (I know this issue is overstated most of the time...but I needed an argument she would go for)...new Featherweight Deluxe soon to be headed to my house.

I love my 270WSM. AWESOME cartridge. I'd like to add a 270 Win to the safe. Nothing I've hunted needed much more than a 150 PT.

When the 140 Partitions came out for the .270, I used them for deer for 4-5 seasons but darned if I can tell the difference between them and the 130 grain Partition. I went back to 130 PT's because they are easier to find. I have killed many more deer with my .270 Winchester than with any other rifle that I own. Hard to fault that especially since all but one of these deer were killed with one shot!

Kongsberg Lakelander 270w. Barrel 24".
Bullet 130 grains barns TSX
