I just ordered a new Ruger Mark II All Weather in .270 WSM. I chose this cartridge for long range deer hunting and should be picking it up tomorrow at my local gun dealer. What bullet would be the best choice for deer? I know the AccuBond and Partition would work, but would the Ballistic Tip be a better long range deer choice? I was thinking possibly the Nosler 140 gr. BT. What's your thoughts on this?
Thanks,
Don

BB,

Your rifle will determine which bullet to shoot. If it likes the 140 AB, I would use it. It will give you the long range performance you are seeking and it will hold together should you have a close range shot at the higher impact velocities.

Keep us posted on how she shoots for you.

What kind of scope are you going to use?

I agree with JD. For long range work, accuracy is #1 followed by velocity and then by bullet selection. Without accuracy, you'll never hit the target. Without velocity, you won't have the required energy to cleanly take game or your bullet won't perform properly. Lastly, without the right bullet you won't be able to take your intended game under all circumstances for which it is being hunted. When the accuracy and velocity of various loads are tried and are equal, always go with the better bullet.

One last thing on long-range work. Always and I mean always shoot your rifle with your hunting load at the ranges you plan on hunting with and never take a ballistics calculator or trajectory chart for granted. There are too many variables out there...scope height...elevation your hunting at, are the crosshairs cenetered...parallax...are you using a sling or bipods. Everything mentioned and more will cause slight variations of your bullet's flight. I shoot at 300 - 500 yards with my long range guns and I know my trajectory and my accuracy of my gun.

JD,
I have a Swift 6-18X40 that I'll try on it. I picked the scope up at my local dealer. It was traded with a rifle and I made him an offer on it. I got it for $75 in great shape. I was able to pick up the rifle today!
