Bought myself a box of 160 partitions for the ole .270 for xmas. Nothin like a new bullet to satisfy a case of O.C.L.D.D. This is the only nosler hunting bullet I have not cooked up a load for. I,m planning on rem. brass with cci-200 primers. I have RL-22. H-4831sc, IMR-4831. I noticed a two grain difference for max load using IMR-4831 between nosler manual no-1 and manual-5. Hmmmm, I would love to see what quick load shows. I know the 160 is not popular but has onyone on here tried this bullet in the legendary .270. Any comments are welcome. :?:

I have thought about trying them as well. Nosler says I should be able to creep up to 3000 with them and man, I would have to think they would be a penetrating bullet! They have a decent BC as well. Maybe if I ever see them on sale, I will let you know. I would gladly give them a whirl with my 270WSM. Might make a really slick elk/moose load for these little old 270's! Scotty

Thought hard about a 270 Weatherby and would have used this bullet there is something about a heavy semispitzer than gets me all fired up. Went with the 264 WM instead but when the tube burns out maybe a 270 or 7mm Wby will get screwed on instead.

I once had some of the 160 gr semispitzers that I used for my .270 when jump shooting my .270 Mannlicher on whitetails in Georgia. They worked great for dumping running deer at short to medium ranges (under 50 yards) with a 2.5x scope.

Should be a good choice for Elk and Moose; if you are hunting them with a .270. Never messed with much for my .270 except 130s that worked perfectly for the last 40 years on Whitetail deer. Its my favorite caliber for deer and sheep. But when the game weight is over 4-500 lbs; and I cant be assured of a perfect shot; I dont usually use a light rifle ........... had a similar idea to yours years ago and tryed 200gr Noslers; and even 250gr Barnes bullets; in my 06 when hunting larger animals; and they worked good; but as soon as I shot a few Moose with the 338; I could see a huge difference; when the angle isnt perfect; and the shots are more what you actually get in real hunting situations.................. a wounded Bull Moose or Trophy Elk pumped up with intentions of leaving the country; presenting a going away shot is not an easy thing to bring back down, I am thinking something in the 250gr sorta bullet weight and sifting along at 2500fps plus sounds alot more like a better chance from our point of view ................. but thats just me.
Good luck with the 160s hope you come up with a super load for it. Under 300 yds with proper shot placement it should not let you down................

I can't see how a 160gr NP chugging along at ~2800fps wouldn't be effective. I thought of them as an elk/moose load but became enamored with the ballistics of the 140gr bullet and settled on the 140gr NAB.

Should be a hammer with the WSM or Wthby variants.

The SD is equivalent of the 200gr .308 bullet which would make it the equal of the 300WSM and 300 WM using a 200gr bullet.

Oh yea. Really good comments guys. Since I retired 4 years ago I,ve been busy loading all the Bt,s, Ab,s and PT,s except the 160 PT in the .270. I,ll be targeting 2800 FPS with the 160 and hopefully moa or better. If this projects proves successfull I will be using the load for elk in heavy cover tipically found in the olyimpic mountains of Western Wa. The rifle will be without a scope on purpose. I already have test loads made up with IMR-4831 and H4831sc. Will see where I,m at with these on Friday. I really think this bullet would be a real winner on elk especially in the terrain where I,ll be using it. Obviously I have a rather active case of O.C.L.D.D. Should be a fun winter time project.

I looked at the 160 in the #6 Nosler. It shows nearly 3100 with the 270WSM. I wish you tons of luck with it. Sounds like an awesome thumper to me. That should be a penetrating beast.

Thats what attracts me to the 160. The penetrating beast theory. With a high SD it should be a mean machine in any .270 and especially in the WSM. If my rifle shoots the 160 accuratly I,ll be one happy camper. :)

The 150gr 277 PT has worked on elk and moose for me in Federal 270win ammo. The 160gr should be better and in the 270WSM is should be a no brainer as long as the gun likes it. Its much like a 160gr in a 280rem but with a higher SD.

Wish they had a higher BC. But for the timber when hunting elk it is the ticket!

Well, so far my test loads are at 2600. Looks like I started pretty slow with IMR-4831 and RL-22. Will be adding powder and looking for 2800 or so. So far just shot a few over the chrony. Will test on targets on Friday with more speed. This is a fun project. Since I,ve never shot the 160 PT I,m starting low and working up SLOWLY. New territory for sure.

Sounds like your getting mighty close to 2800. With some more fuel or maybe another powder I can't see a 270 Win not doing an easy 2700+ with that bullet. That should be a great load when your done. Looking forward to seeing your results.
